"American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard has sued hip-hop clothing maker 205 Flava Inc., saying the company wrongly profited from his image after he wore its jerseys on the singing competition.

The lawsuit says the defendants have unfairly and unlawfully exploited and capitalized on Studdard's popularity.

It estimates the company has made at least $2 million in sales after exploiting Studdard's image, and that Studdard is entitled to some of the profits.

Until religion is no more, it will always be both. Having two adults as the basic generational family unit is hardwired into our evolutionary history. So it was formalized with a religious overlay for millennia. Sex was the reason we formed pair bonds, but religion was what kept us from breaking them at will. The state cannot simply say, "We recognize these two are one" without heavily relying upon its deep resonance with notions of romantic love, devotion, eternity and fidelity that are echoes of Western religious tradition.

As for affording "benefits" based on marital status, I have no idea how the state can stop doing so. The tax benefit/burden issue is complicated and can be easily reset --- maybe it should be. But when a person becomes incompetent, who else but their spouse will speak for them? When a person dies intestate, who else but their spouse will inherit?

Religion is the reason we have dissolution proceedings rather than "see ya!" I'm all in favor of no-fault divorce, because the alternative was so horrific. But, even putting religion aside, the state still has an interest in making divorce somewhat messy and expensive, because a two-parent family is more likely to be self-sufficient and economically efficient. (I think we should do things that encourage intergenerational living, too, because I think that's also more efficient than alternatives.)

That's basically what we're moving toward, hampered only by fundamentalism's hold on the American psyche. We make fun of the Northern European welfare states, but socially we'll be there in twenty years. We'll go there kicking and screaming, though.

I disagree. These notions are older than Western religious tradition (if by that you mean Judeo-Christian trandition), and do not need a religious underpinning to exist.



You make the point of gay activists who seek equality in this area. Gay partners want they same right to visit their loved ones in the hospital, make health care decisions for unconcious or mentally incompetent partners, direct funeral arrangements, and inherit property that straight married people have. But the government has denied gay people those rights by refusing them marriage licenses.

I get that idea too. About being able to marry not about Jodi Foster. But I do concur that Jodi Foster would be a good handmaiden.

Anybody have any advice on how I can keep myself safe from the crazy homophobes who I filmed protesting this weekend? Apparently they are...perturbed with me, they know who I am because I testified against them last year and I'll be doing so again this year. And now my family has me all paranoid about it.

We're closer to Sweden than we think. We have a bloated public sector which cannot afford to provide the 8 billion services it offers just like the Swedes. The only difference between the two countries is the tax system.

One of the very few good things to come out of this presidency will be that a whole lotta services will wither and fall away. A whittling down of the govt's service organizations is sorely needed.
