2. How did anyone miss it?

Except I have to take issue with the suggestion Jesse Jackson sounds black, white or any other race or ethnicity. His accent is bizarre. I've not heard a person of any color or background speak with the strange cadences and emphases he uses. Sui generis, if I were one of those Latin dropping tools.

You rang?

Jackson doesn't have an accent so much as he has a Southern preacher cadence. He, MLK, and Al Sharpton sound more like each other than they sound like what white folks think black folks sound like. Obama can turn it on and off -- when he's speaking at events like the inauguration he wasn't sounding like a white guy so much as he was calling on a tradition of public speaking that is technically neither, but which precious few white people can carry off.

Because you grew up in black churches?

What are you taking about? Sharpton sounds nothing like Jackson. Sharpton has almost no distinctive cadence to his speech. He's a garden variety animated speaker who places traditional emphases in his lines. MLK, at least in speeches, did have a staccato delivery at times, but when he wasn't emphasizing a point, he was smooth and the words flowed like any other speaker's.

Jackson's a different animal. He has a bizarre affectation that causes him to pronounce common words in a manner no one else does. And when he strings them together, the pauses come in places no one else would ever put them. Ever seen that Talking Heads record where all the songs and liner notes and chopped up in strange places ("Burning Down the House" written as "Burni ngDow nTheH ouse")? Jackson speaks the way the Heads wrote those liner notes and titles. If he were a rapper, he'd have the oddest flow on the planet. My only curiosities are where he got his speaking style and whether it's contrived. If so, he's incredibly disciplined.

I don't see enough of Sharpton to defend that point. But when I hear Jackson, I hear a man who has seized a lot from MLK. Whether black preachers sounded like that before MLK I can't say for sure, but I'm told it's part of the tradition when in the pulpit -- kind of like stage British, or the sort of weird thing people do in "the theatre" when they're trying to project. And the black preachers I've heard have a particular cadence very unlike white preachers, and the white clergy I know have ruefully admitted they wished they had whatever it is. I remember a particular sermon by Michael Curry, the ECUSA Bishop of North Carolina, that was equal parts MLK and Bill Cosby -- just awesome.

It's worse than that. It isn't about Strom personally, but about what made Strom unique at the time, which was holding the line on segregation.

Atticus is right. They are all born from the same place. The Southern black church preacher. They may each have their own styles (and Jackson has become a caricature), but the cadences and melodic ryhthms come from the Southern black church. And MLK wasn't the first. He was just the best.

My point was more that Jackson still couldn't have run in 2008. Sure, he may have done better than he did in '84, but our country is still not ready for a presidential candidate who is that black. Yet.

Which is why Blagojevich never had a chance, despite his absurd belief in his prospects to be prez.

Also, not that it matters, I think what he said ("[I'm blacker than Obama]") was more specifically racist than what Lott said.

While I see where you are going, I think that is a false comparison. Blago's comment was stupid and demeaning. It basically was trying to equate a rough inner city childhood with being black. It buys into the stereotype of poor inner city youth. It's racist, but really just in a ignorant sort of way.

Lott's comment showed a longing for a simpler time of segregation of the races. This is beyond ignorant. It shows that he thought we should have kept them down where they belonged, that they really can't handle the freedoms and rights they now have. It has only caused problems. Lott praised the idea that black people are fundamentally unable to handle being full members of our society. It is racist in the most fundamental way.

I still don't see how either compare with Reid's statement.

He claims the A-A community as his base, more than any other group. He's not ignorant, in that way. He ran off at the mouth; that's his strength.

It was mainly an expression of personal animosity wrapped in racist clothing. However, it came across (to me) as calling BO a house n*****. Which is different from, but I think similar in degree-of-racism to, Lott's quote--which was:
"When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either."
Trent was 7 when Strom ran for prez. While what he said was indefensible, b/c he either knew or should have known the racist agenda and that his encomium would be interpreted as support for the agenda (he should have said "better off", as he could point to spending/social programs or some other nonsense), he was speaking much more metaphorically than our good friend Rod. Lott's words are at least as attributable to ignorance as Rod's, just different sorts of ignorance.

The best proof of this is that he can be portrayed, accent/cadence and all, by a white guy on SNL with no outcry of racism. Of course, so is Obama, but I believe everybody will agree that I'm mostly correct in saying that Fred Armisen couldn't do Obama if Obama had even a hint of a black dialect.

I was with Jackson back when he ran in 84 and I was a young punk in Chicago for a brief time. (Yes, I'm old). I think it is entirely possible that he could have won a race (probably not that one, but another in the future) for President but for his own doing. It was astonishing how much traction he had, and how much unexpected traction, prior to the Hymietown remarks. It's easy to forget, because it dissipated so quickly and because he became such a joke among certain portions of the population, but there was a brief and shining moment.

Of course, I also believe that Huck could win it all some day.

Do you think Palin's employment at Fox foreshadows a Huck/Palin ticket? Also, did you realise that when Huck was governor, he unlocked the cell and escorted the pardoned cop killer dude from Arkansas to the state of Washington (apparently dropped him off at the OR/WA border and then went to Portland to VooDoo donuts)??

I have been trying to follow the breaking news on the tragedy in Haiti, but every TV show I put on, paper I pick up and website I go to has pictures of dead and/or dying people. I am not sure what these pictures add to the story and further the children and co-workers perched on my shoulders are offended by these sights.

Does anyone know if there is a world wide media super-moderator whom I can petition to turn these pictures into links? A UN office perhaps?

Q: What is "Spree disclosure"?

A: After a spate of posts that included only a hyperlink to other sites, Latrell Sprewell made a new rule: if someone posts a hyperlink, they must disclose the subject matter of the item to which they are linking. This is to identify to unwary users what is contained behind the link. Past undisclosed links have been linked to sex sites and gore related sites (causing one GA to almost throw up in his office after viewing the aftermath of someone having jumped off of a tall building). A link must disclose the subject matter of the page, or else it will be deleted.
From the FAQ of a different board, with more enlightened and less censorious mods. Though I question how frequently the question is asked, nowadays.

2. Those rules started before there was a politics board, which, in theory, should be a different animal if we want to encourage a lively political discussion.

3. we are not talking about porn, or NSFW sites, we are talking about mainstream media photos that convey imagery related to a topical issues.

Perhaps if we had less censorship, we would generate more newber traffic and in turn more interesting discussion threads on the important issues of the day.

Whatever. I still honor the rule. If deleting a link for inadequate disclosure of content (regardless, as I read the rule, of whether there is in fact objectionable content at the linked site) is within bounds, preventing the auto-loading of images that would be difficult to explain of seen is not beyond the pale of a time, place or manner restriction.
