Re: The thread where Spring has sprung, and Penske has risen from the law. Word!
A friend is thinking about dumping her BB for an iPhone, and wants advice. Any advice? She's sold on the iPhone, the questions go to timing/model/plan/etc.

I saw the first round of this on Above the Law, and honestly I think this asshole and the idiot lawyer he interviewed with were made for each other -- did you catch her request that he snoop on her employees for her? But the Craigslist stuff, well, that just adds levels on levels. Let's just say, he really didn't need to declare himself done with the legal profession. |

I have an older one and I really love it. I'm waiting to buy the I pad but I'm not sure if I can deal with how clunky it is. the ipad is good for book reading beautiful crisp resolution. we have a mac book pro and well. it is nice but beat on at this point. it is unlimited data and basically is around 90-100 bucks a month or so thru att&t you can buy unlocked jailbreaked ones in the city but they are voided warranty I think. the battery life sucks ass. but you deal and always have a charger. I recommend a car charger and gonna buy one as well. I would purchase apple care. extended warranty. maybe not on cars but I regret not buying on i phone. jobs is working on running dual apps. like slacker radio and surfing safari. they're "workin' on it" I like the you tube functionality and the slacker and pandora apps for i phone you can download wsj feed and tmz. I want a newer one but gonna wait. at&t ain't the best. I must admit. I'll have 5 bars and still drop out. I am still fascinated by the siren song call of the droid phones that can run dual apps. but they even you can't go on internet when a call comes in and i phone u can. also--they fuck you hard on the international calls. be very careful I had to call australia for work and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I believe if you switch between 3G and Edge you can conserve battery life. which I do a lot. yES. like A said you must call and switch to international or you're screwed and i pod will run and will RING IN HEADPHONES which I like I ripped all my shit into i pod. I only run slacker when I'm sleeping commuting. they have turn by turn directions which yeah suck while you're driving but are great if you get a loaner; no GPS and want ballpark where the heck to go to get home. like anything else bad reception when you hit a good spot your email will blow up. I saw the palm pre and I am underwhelmed. big time. and the whole "I need a real keyboard" thing? like anything else you learn you deal you adjust. I can fire off serious fast email missives on the touch screen again the slacker on iphone is better than pandora for i phone. it really is quite awesome. I use it for my alarm also. it's freakin' loud. More importantly I'm obsessed with the idea of satellite radio and blue tooth in my car. yes that's luddite but 2-4 hours of the grateful dead channel I'm now I can identify sets. i never understood harmon-kardon but I do notice a discernable diff. |

For personal use, or for web browsing, the iphone is waaaay better. There is no comparison. It's in a different category. That said, I'm with TM and would wait for the new model. I don't know how different it will be, but who wants to be behind the times in technology. As for plan, there isn't that much to say. Unlimited data is required. You can get international plans if you travel (even if you only buy it for a month). Minutes and texts depend on usuage, but aren't any different than any other phone. ETA: As for network, it isn't 100%, but in my travels so far around the US and a little bit abroad, it has been fine. I don't really get much for coverage where I currently am in the north woods, but that isn't really that different from tmobile or verizon. But it actually worked better than my tmobile blackberry in Egypt and Jordan (with the above mentioned international plan to not spend the whole paycheck). The multiple aps thing that verizon/google tries to use as a differentiator isn't much of a big deal. Sure, sometimes it would be nice to switch out, but you can listen to music (ipod) while doing whatever, which is the main things I want to multitask. Also, the way it transitions from ipod to phone call and back is pretty cool. |

My current theory is that touch screen typing is simply a learned skill, and that after a while you don't even think about the differences. |
