Maybe. But I really wish I could write like Klosterman. He is good.

But not as good as Michael Chabon. God damn that guy can write. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is probably the best book I've read in the past five years.

I've recommended this in the past. If you like Kavalier & Clay, you'll also like The Yiddish Policemen's Union, also by Chabon.

translucent isn't a color. it is a relative term for how hard it is for light to get in. if you want a scale, your sister was "transparent' in the "how hard is it to get in category."

Agreed. K&C was the first book of his that I read. I've read most of the rest since then, and it's been a steady stream of disappointment -- ranging from enormous (the Wonder Boys) to a little (Yiddish Police...)

K&C was published in september 2000. Since then we've all read great fiction in the way of your and Ty's PB posts, so these novelists pale in comparison maybe?

You didn't believe it at the time, but my stuff turned out to be non-fiction.

The two women we were with thought they could get more numbers than we could and we were just drunk enough to take offense and decided to bet on it. And they would have creamed us, of course, if we played fair--although, no one ever said we couldn't mention that we were having a competition while competing. And yes, I realize that really just means we were having a contest about who could talk to the most people.

Anyway, my friend and I set out to talk to every girl in the bar in an attempt to get numbers. It worked amazingly well, even with the women who didn't believe us and were convinced we were hitting on them. We would just walk up to a group of women and say, "You see those two women over there talking to those guys? Well, we're having a competition to see who can get the most phone numbers. We don't even live in San Diego, so you can give us fake names and numbers, if you like. We're just trying to win." Half of the girls would give us their real names and numbers (just in case they wanted to test us) and even the girls who didn't believe us gave up their numbers. It was truly weird, especially since we would have gotten nowhere with anyone if we just asked them if they wanted to hang out sometime.

Anyway, with this tactic, we won. And I think the prize was more drinks, which was not a very good idea.

You could have made the prize more pie.

Wonderboys could have been fantastic, but it wasn't. It wasn't horrible, but the writing was significantly less mature than K&C.

Re: it Thurgreed coaches his kid's teams

  • Girls Basketball Coach Fired After 100-0 Win

The coach of a Texas high school basketball team that beat another team 100-0 was fired Sunday, the same day he sent an e-mail to a newspaper saying he will not apologize "for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

Kyle Queal, the headmaster for Covenant School, said in The Dallas Morning News online edition that he could not answer if the firing was a direct result of coach Micah Grimes' e-mail disagreeing with administrators who called the blowout "shameful."

Queal did not immediately answer phone messages or e-mail from The Associated Press.

On its Web site last week, Covenant, a private Christian school, posted a statement regretting the outcome of its Jan. 13 shutout win over Dallas Academy. "It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition," said the statement, signed by Queal and board chair Todd Doshier.

Grimes, who has been criticized for letting the game get so far out of hand, made it clear in the e-mail Sunday to the newspaper that he does not agree with his school's assessment.

"In response to the statement posted on The Covenant School Web site, I do not agree with the apology or the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel embarrassed or ashamed," Grimes wrote in the e-mail, according to the newspaper. "We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

I believe I read elsewhere that the losing team was a school for the learning disabled, so maybe they'll forget the loss before their next game?

Bob L'Eponge.

Did you know that LEGO sets featuring Spongebob Squarepants characters have, for whatever reason, English and French descriptions on the outside of the box? I know! But it's true. I have also learned that the French word for "Spongebob" is "Bob L'Eponge."

After contemplating this a bit, today my new career goal is to become the voice-over talent for the French broadcast version of Spongebob Squarepants. I'm not sure that I can swing the nerdy, narcissistic homoeroticism of Squidward, but I think I have an inside track on capturing the profound stupidity of a French Patrick Star.

I didn't hate it. It's just that K&C was so descriptive and sweeping in scope that WB seems almost amateurish in comparison.

Didn't even know it was shut. Or that people call you "Dr. Bill" these days. You must be well chuffed.

Whispers on the street say that Rocky Sullivan's might be coming back to Lexington Avenue. Same scenario: landlord had visions of a trendy boutique and twice the rent and then reality bit.

I am not Dr. Bill, though I used to have his card (it read simply, "Dr. Bill"). He used to eat at the restaurant in my building after his shift. He also tends bar at a place called Twins on 34th. He's quite a character.

Torre

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog...3dolney_buster

I'm with Olney on this whole Torre flap. I think he's a huge hypocrite. He knew exactly what he was doing with those quotes. And if you don't believe that, then you can't give him any credit for managing the press so well in New York, because in order to be any good at it you have to be particularly savvy with your quotes. So, was he just lucky then or is he lying his ass off now?

Whatever. This story is bigger than it should be. But finally, people are starting to look at Torre the way I've been looking at him for years. The Yankees made Torre, he did not make the Yankees. He inherited a championship team, right when they peaked (including a great trade for a free agent pitcher) and managed that core through 4 championships. Once the team was completely his (with a record payroll and arguably the best talent in the league), he did the minimum with what he had. He sucked as a manager with the Cardinals and the Mets, which leads me to believe that many an average manager with an even temperment could have done as well as he did. He actively didn't manage in favor of a formula that worked only when Mariano was the set-up man or could go two innings without breaking a sweat as closer. He thought that the salary he was making was a birthright and not a gift from Steinbrenner. And he thought he was too good to be asked to structure his salary with incentives while simultaneously asking his players to do just that. He walked out the door insulted that he would be paid way more than market for succeeding. Now, he talks shit about players to sell books and acts like he was betrayed by Cashman because he didn't get the contract he wanted.

Can you imagine his reaction to a player on his team who did that? Oh, wait. Sheffield, Mondesi, Wells, all were given a quick boot out the door and Torre's disgust. And, mind you, they're not exactly role models. But what does it say about him that he does the exact same thing first chance he gets?

Hypocrite.
