I'm embarrassed to admit that I know exactly which guy you're talking about. And the other guy on that show (the boyfriend?) had the fattest thighs, really, a very unattractive and weird build on him.

And Purse Junkie's point about lacy underwear reminded me of a pet peeve about lacy bras with seams on the cups. Why do they make these? More importantly, why do women buy them? They look bad under everything. And why do the wardrobe people on NYPD Blue put them on the actresses? Kim Delaney spent a significant portion of her career sporting a lumpy disheveled rack. She obviously needs a better agent.

We often disagree, but you're dead on with this one. Sex on mushrooms is disturbing. Or maybe it was thr Rumplemintz that was working on me... Either way, I gave up that idea for good...

Very meditative, as you say. Glad to hear the film is good too - I look forward to it.

As an aside, I really like sushi - have liked it for years. I really like the texture and the taste and eating with chopsticks. It's fun food.

And this is a little story for Paigow - if she is out there (because it involves minor celebrity and umbrellas). Dominick Dunne (who is apparently very short) whacked me in the head with his unnaturally large Gucci (I think) umbrella on the street today. I glared at him and he said "I'm so sorry" in a sort of spaced out way.
I think I hate oversized designer umbrellas more than I hate fur coats and LessinSF. I have to fight the urge to grab them and snap them in half. I think maybe I shoudl try a different tactic. Go to Burberry and buy a fucking beach umbrella and parade around in it when it is THREATENING RAIN or SNOWING. Just be the umbrella asshole of the year. I am sorry for Mister Dunne's mistreatement of you. I have lost all respect for him, and I do like his writing, though he may be in that overrated category for writers since OJ. Loved his early novels.

And on a totally unrelated note, I am thinking that perhaps I have had cunninglingus with only the Sebbys of the world (which would amek sense since I probably met them tripping at dead shows or at hunter s thompson book signings). I need to find more Jack MANfreds.

1) Lobster and Caviar are fantastic. You guys are nuts. TRUFFLES, however, are costlier than both and offer little to me.
2) Sad to say, but ROBERT DeNIRO. Since the Godfather II, he's done [what feels like] 5 movies every single year playing the exact same character - the only difference is whether he's the "Mean" tough guy or the "Funny" tough guy. Or both. And his pal Marty needs to tell him one of these days that he doesn't need to do every damn movie he's offered.
3) Babs. I just don't get it.
4) Rather than say law firm - I'd rather say "law graduates" And hands down, this goes to HARVARD GRADS. Almost every one I ever worked with treated their assignment as if it was beneath them, and all had a chip on their shoulder that they didn't get into Yale. And yes, I was too dumb to go to Harvard.
5) STOCKBROKERS. Never before has a profession let so many ignoramuses make so much fucking money.
6) I do not how you can critcize Kane as it deserves all the praise it receives. Truly a remarkable, cutting edge and incendiary film. "Schindler's List" was already mentioned, but I second its nomination. Picking recent overrated Best Picture winners is far too easy, since they all were. So I'll just go with Gone With the Wind. Sprawling - yes. Timeless - yes. But the acting was hammy, even by 1939's standards.
7) Toss up between Yesterday by the Beatles and Satisfaction by the Stones. Two songs routinely touted as two of the greatest of all time by two of the greatest artists of all time. Greatest Artists clearly, but I can think of 25 songs by each band better than these tunes.
8) ANYTHING on HBO It's fascinating to watch critics drool all over themselves over repetitive and retarded dreck like Sopranos [sucked since Season 1], SATC [only thing making watching that SJP witch tolerable is seeing Kim's tits week after week], 6 Feet Under [wow, people die and people are gay. Wild] and OZ [gee, what can we get away with this week]. All highly overrated, if not totally awful
9) BOXER SHORTS. They cut off circulation in your quads and leave VBL in your pants.
10) Okay, call me a heretic but Blow Jobs are highly overrated. Most girls use so much teeth its outright painful, and others just ain't doing it right. Can you please take off your pants and let's cut to the chase?
Blow jobs are overrated. Unless its the only way to shut her up.

Sex is much better and feels like a workout if you really get into it.

That said, I did know a chick who gave hummers which were so spectacular I still recall it ten years later. She ruined all other women for me in that regard, so maybe I'm unfiarly biased.

Yama, Blue Ribbon and Sushi of Gari are all good, but you would be surprised at the difference in taste and texture between Nobu's tuna, Tomoe's fish and the rest of the sushi restaurants.... Haven't been to Sushi Samba yet, but it sounds good.
Tomoe is great, but I prefer the Yama on Carmine [which, I find, is better than its brethren on Houston and Gramercy AND takes reservations].

I used to be a big fan of Suibi on 53rd but I haven't eaten there in about 5 years.

Best sushi in town, bar none, is the unassuming Sushi Yasuda on 44th (?) - but don't go unless you're on an expense account.

The WSJ ran a piece a while back that indicated that it is effectively impossible to get real wasabi in the U.S. Since then, I've studied the wasabi ingredients labels at my local Japanese market and it is always horseradish. The WSJ article was about someone who was starting a wasabi farm on the West Coast. The growing technique was a highly guarded secret and the stuff very expensive but available by mail order from their web site.

Sometimes. While I also like just plain horseradish, the green powdered (real) wasabi is also available here - just harder to find. (Most is made from western horseradish, and is still better than just plain horseradish - the good stuff is made from the japanese horseradish, and tastes different, and even better.)

(BTW, wasabi is a natural food poisoning antidote - that's why it is traditionally served with the raw fish dishes.)

Underrated list

Good call, Jack.

1. Food: Beef. Whether we are talking about the simple joy of a cheeseburger at the local joint, or the pricey joy of a filet at the Palm, beef is good. Oh, sure, I like chicken, and there are health issues with too much red meat, but there's a reason that my ancestors were forced to eat potatoes so that Baron Whatshisname could eat beef. It tastes good.

2. Actor: Bogart. The guy could play the romantic lead, the bad guy, the tough good guy, and the cynic with the heart of gold. Don't believe me? Don't even bother with Casablanca (which I love) -- watch the Maltese Falcon, Sabrina, the African Queen, Key Largo, and the Treasure of Sierra Madre.

3. Band/Singer: Jimmy Buffett is regarded as a lightweight party type music guy (Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?) with a fan base of goofy corporate drones escaping their pitiful lives for a day at his shows by wearing loud tropical shirts and drinking too much Corona. But people often overlook his serious stuff -- A Pirate Looks at 40, Come Monday, and songs like that.

4. Law firm: None that would mean anything to any non Podunkvillian.

5. Occupation: I'll echo the person who picked day care. Oh, and teachers.

6. Movie: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Perhaps John Wayne's best acting, James Stewart givng a great performance as a "hero" wrestling with himself, and an ambiguous message. Yet the consensus is that Shane is *the* great western. Granted, the ending of Shane ("Shane! Come back, Shane!") is moving, but what about hearing "that's the man who shot Liberty Valence" as we see Stewart sigh? Perfection.

7. Song: I'll catch some flack for this, I am sure, but I just listened to the Jagged Little Pill CD, and You Oughta Know still sounds great to me. Angry Chick music arrived on mainstream radio thanks to that song. Great lines, too -- "are you thinking of me while you fuck her?" and "you told me you'd hold me until we died, but you're still alive!" Alanis may not know irony, but who cares?

8. TV Show: Sports Night. I still can't believe that Sorkin's second best show survived and this one didn't. ABC sucks.

9. Article of clothing: The ascot, of course. Along with the smoking jacket.

10. Sexual position or activity: They're all good.

Although many people believe that you're supposed to season the soy sauce to taste with wasabi, I've heard that it's actually an insult to a good sushi chef. The sushi chef is supposed to put the right amount of wasabi on each type of sushi such that it compliments the taste of the fish, just so. I always buy sashimi now, so I can get the right combo of rice, wasabi and soy sauce (as defined by me) with each piece.

Also, miso soup is supposed to be served with the meal, not as an appetizer. And if it comes with a spoon, they're treating you like a gringo (always comes with a spoon unless you order in Japanese).

I was also told that if the restaurant makes its own Tamago (egg sushi -- not fish egg, regular egg), and doesn't buy them from a vendor, then that is a tip that the fish will also be very fresh. Asking if they make their own supposedly shows the waiter that you know what you're doing and will result in a better meal. I have no personal experience from which to confirm this.

If you sprinkle soy sauce across the wasabi, it makes the wasabi much more pungent. If you want to enjoy wasabi's taste liberally on sushi without killing the taste of the fish, I recommend placing a dab of it squarely on top of the fish, or smearing it on the underside of a piece of shashimi, separate from wherever the fish may be touched with soy. When you eat the fish, you taste the fish first and the wasabi acts as a finisher. At first, it numbs the tongue, but after doing it a lot, you really appreciate the sweet spiciness of wasabi and still notice the fish.

Wasabi is great:

Mixed into potato salad
Mashed with potatos
Mixed into mayo (even though I hate mayo)
On lobster (lobster/wasabi mashed potatos are killer)

If you're coooking rare tuna steakes, wasabi mixed with a little bit of heny and soy is a great glaze.
