If this is a serious question, I think you should emulate either Johnny Chan or Scotty Nguyen. If this is not a serious question, I think you should just go as a douche.

I've noticed that a couple pairs of sterling silver cufflinks (that I haven't worn in years) have tarnished. What's the best way to clean them? Plain old silver polish from the supermarket?

Actual Travel Question

For anyone who has been to Vegas recently, how are the rooms at the Palms? I'm in need of a vacation, and room rates in Vegas have taken a nosedive. As I'm no longer a GA, money is a factor, so I won't be getting a suite at the Wynn.

As for dress at the poker table, if the event is at an actual poker room, skip the hooded sweatshirt. Some card rooms don't like the hoodie and sunglasses look as their security cameras become near useless if the player comes in with the hood up. Phil Laak gets a break at the tables because (a) he's a pro, so everyone knows him already, (b) the hoodie is more of a gimmick now, (c) even when he does don the hood, it's usually after he's gone all-in, and (d) he used his Irish charm to pull Jennifer Tilly.

http://www.peacegames.org/uploadImag...er%20Tilly.jpg

P.S. Don't emulate Phil Helmuth or Scotty Nguyen in dress or in manner at the poker table. Phil's a notorious cad at the tables, though his book Play Poker Like The Pros would be worth a read before the tourney. Scotty Nguyen got drunk at an event last year and behaved like a boor in a televised match.

P.P.S. If you don't already own a cowboy hat, don't even think of wearing one at a poker table.

Sure. I also have a polishing cloth, which I believe builds in a little polish and you can use that to "buff" the links. May not work on heavy tarnish . . . I use it every few weeks and it keeps them shiny.

Yes, then use a buffing cloth to keep them clean....

Got an email from Tiffany and Co. that they are doing free silver cleanings from 2/1 to 2/14. If they are badly tarnished, it wouldn't hurt to have them professionally cleaned.

Kind of crappy, in my limited experience with that hotel. Also, they have possibly the worst food options of any hotel you'd consider staying in. Some decent higher-end restaurants, but if you want something quick and decent you're out of luck -- Panda Express and McDs is the level of your options.

OTOH, the casino is great. Not too huge, and the slot machines are well-separated from the tables, and not kept on a very high volume, so you can play table games without feeling like you are sitting in a pinball-machine.

I'd recheck the Wynn and even the Encore again if you're planning to go--I know that even midweek they were having some $159 specials, which would be a pretty amazing deal for those properties. You gotta figure that the other hotels would be even cheaper. Nothing's as cheap as free though, so go find yourself several casino hosts this trip, be nice, give the casino some action and then get all your future trips for "free", which probably won't be free, but at least you can say your room and meals were free.

We've been staying at Planet Hollywood lately (used to be the Aladdin). It took them a couple of years to get the renovations done, but I've been happy with the rooms, restaurants, etc. Also, in case it matters (it does to me), it is a Starwood property. We'll be there this weekend... Go Cards!

The Mirage just renovated their entire hotel, and they're offering $45/night weeknights and $75/night weekends through June if you're a member of the MGM/Mirage Players Club. Just sign up.

Otherwise, I and some other people I know like TheHotel or the Mandalay itself. Of course, it's better to go to the Mandalay when the pool area is open . . . .

ETA: And yeah, some friends just stayed at the Wynn for under $200/night.

1. Of course its a serious question. I am mostly misunderstood as not being dead pan serious. All. of. the. time. Its how the corner office rolls.

2. I don't know those people so much, but I googled them in image mode. What's the look....Vegas casual with either a hat or mirrored glasses?

Yesterday's meat bikini post probably serves as a persuasive rebuttal to PETA's posit, but, the ad is a nice visual diversion from the petty details of corner office to do items.

I thought I had but it must have been someone else. If Torre put his name on the book,* it's hard for him to walk away from what's in the book, even if -- and this seems more than plausible -- Verducci did the reporting and wrote the parts based on what he heard, and Torre didn't bother to read them.

Not that there's any reason to think this happened here, but a family member was listed as the co-author on a book for which he wrote the forward or some such thing. Very strange. He got the publisher to pulp all their stock, or so they said, but copies keep showing up at used book stores.

* eta: And he did:

And that's really the point. Unless he specifically specifies in the book what can be attributed to him, he's on the hook for the whole thing. Both of them are. They both knew what would sell books and they went for it. Add to that the fact that I believe Torre actually thinks Cashman betrayed him (and he probably did) and that ARod is a primadonna and all the other stuff he wrote and he has not a leg to stand on when people criticize him the same way he criticized Wells and other players who aired insider team dynamics.

Either way, I think he's still insane for demanding the payday he did for managing the media. Because the guy is simply a lump as a tactical manager.

It's tempting to go with the perceived "safe" option in troubled economic times, but people should avoid radical changes to their retirement portfolio mix and long term strategy.

I myself was tempted to cash out my Fidelity funds and buy a six pack of domestic beer (ok, five pack), but I didn't panic and will stick with a balanced assortment of equities, bond funds, old comic books and deposit bottles.

My portfolio is actually a little too heavily weighted toward the bottles right now. I'm thinking of a move into McDonald's Monopoly game pieces when they start doing that again.

Harvard Scores $10M Gift in Honor of Larry Tribe
Posted by Dan Slater
Someone really likes Laurence Tribe. Really likes him.

Today, Harvard Law School, where Tribe teaches con law, received an anonymous gift of $10 million in honor of Tribe. According to an email sent out by Dean and Solicitor General-designate Elena Kagan sent to the HLS faculty, the chair will be named for Tribe (Harvard, Harvard Law) when he retires from the faculty. Until then, by Tribe’s request, the chair will be named for Thurgood Marshall.

“I do not know of any comparable gift ever made to HLS in honor of a faculty member,” wrote Kagan. “Perhaps that is just one measure of how incomparable Larry’s role at HLS has been.”
