Ba-dum-bum. Seriously, chairs are commonly named after living people -- either the donor, or the person the donor chooses to honor. The renaming of the "Tribe Chair" will be a big deal, and used as an opportunity to hit the donor and all of Tribe's admirers up for yet more money.

Will he retire before he dies? Couldn't Tribe move to the Pitcairns and remain a full professor in good standing?

He'll retire when Obama appoints him to the Supreme Court . . .

I understand how chairs work. There was anon donor who wanted one named after Tribe. Tribe evidently thought it a bit odd to have a chair named after him while he's still on the faculty, so asked that the honor be postponed until his retirement. I asked merely why not even longer, since the chair will go on, in theory, forever.

Question.

In what kind of sick world do we live where your last pistachio nut, which is almost fully sealed is completely empty? I mean, that's one cruel joke.

Sealed? Pistachio nuts have shells? How depressing it is to hear about a world in which one must engage in the drudgery of repetitive labor for every little morsel of nut one wishes to enjoy. It is almost enough to make me take Penske off the totally respectful ignore.

According to an email sent out by Dean and Solicitor General-designate Elena Kagan sent to the HLS faculty, the chair will be named for Tribe (Harvard, Harvard Law) when he retires from the faculty. Until then, by Tribe’s request, the chair will be named for Thurgood Marshall.

They spelled my name wrong.

Because the U would prefer to honor him with a renaming ceremony while he's still alive.

If he retires and stays on as professor emeritus, he'll keep the title till they grab it out of his cold, dead hand. Therefore the chair won't be named after him until he's not around to feel embarrassed by the honor.

Which was my point--Tribe doesn't expect to retire from that job. Are there any plausible circumstances in which Harvard would force him to retire?

Maybe if he intentionally killed a student?

22yo college grad has put her virginity up for bids on Bunny Ranch website. Latest bid is $3.8M.

Man, that sounds pretty valuable. Makes me feel bad that I already gave mine away! Good news, though, is Flinty has some definite upside if he'll just embrace the entrepreneurial spirit.

If a mom has 6 kids, how does a responsible doctor (a) agree to provide fertility treatment and (b) allow the mother to carry 8 fetuses to term? (I thought that fertility docs generally reduced to 2 or 3 because of the usual concerns over multiples . . .

It's like lawyers representing repeat offenders....

I think decisions over reduction are left to patients. Many oppose reduction on religious grounds.

In the doc's defense, they thought there were only 7 kids in there.

My first thought was to wonder why someone with 6 kids would want any more, much less go through fertility treatment to get them.

(a): I'm surprised a doctor would implant that many fetuses, whether or not a woman already had 6 kids. I thought it was usually no more than 3 or 4, and a small woman I know had just 2 implanted because she didn't want the risk of more. I assumed it was fertility drugs and not IVR.

(b) I don't think docs have any right to force a mother to terminate any fetuses even if the number is that high. They probably have a duty to advise of the health risks but can't do anything more.

I think that insurance companies should seek payment from the fertility clinics when these multi-million dollar multiple birth deliveries happen.

Quote:

They try to. Or at least they tried to with the Jon & Kate plus 8 couple. A lot of times the couples aren't exactly pro-choice and selective termination isn't really considered an option. I suspect if they had to foot the delivery and NICU bills themselves, they'd think a little harder about it.

My boyfriend and I talked a little about this last night. I said I had no problem with selective termination if I'm carrying more than three fetuses due to fertility treatment. He said he had no problem with adoption if for some reason we can't get pregnant.
