But that call is absolutely ridiculous. Unless you clearly see the guy is safe, you gotta call him out. What a fucking jackass. It seems like (just from watching Yankees games this season--and the calls have gone both ways) umpires want to be part of the game more than ever this year. What a stupid fucking call.

as you might imagine, we've seen more angles here, and it wasn't close, and he was solid on the bag- BUT the umpire only has one angle. still I gotta agree that you don't call safe there unless he was surely safe.

Let the players decide the game!

But 2. Even the batter looked stunned to have been called safe.

2. How do you not defer the 27th out in a perfect game on a close play to the pitcher? How the fuck do you end a perfect game on a close play like that?

Havent heard the answer to this - Can they overturn on appeal, and perhaps re-do the last out and give him a second shot?

Umpires are desperately seeking attention now more than ever before. I think this guy was very successful in this regard.

You know this is a big deal when it drags Slave out of the woodwork.

When Brett hit his pine-tar home run, he was initially called out, but then the home run was reinstated after the protest. That was a rules interpretation, though, not a judgment call.

If the guy was definitely safe and he was 100% sure of it, then he shouldn't call him out to preserve a perfect game because that's not a perfect game. I can't stand when umps start doing that after a long game and it seems clear they just want to go home. But after seeing the replay from other angles, as Hank and GGG said, that call was not even close. What a fucking moron.

Fuck a do-over. That was the final out. MLB should overturn the call, declare the game over and give the kid his perfect game.

I know this should go on the travel board, but no one ever goes there any more.

We are thinking about taking a trip in early August to celebrate our first anniversary. Probably leave here on Thursday night and return Monday.

The places that are easy to get to from here would just suck in August.

So, we're thinking Paris, Milan, or Madrid (all of which we could fly to non-stop from MIA).

Anyone have any alternative ideas, or thoughts on the 3 cities listed above?

The thing is, Joyce has acknowledged that he blew the call and apologized. So even the ump who made the call says it was wrong. He has no defenders. (For the poliboard - maybe this guy should work with the Israeli government?)

But there is no rule that lets them overturn, is there? Any creative lawyering that can be done here on the baseball rules.

the worst of it is the guy had been struggling, like almost dropping out of the league struglling. there is a real good chance that game would have been his real career, say if Verlander lost it, not as fucked up, but this guy is Don Larson (or might be).

I fully expected to wake up this morning to news that Joyce was hunted down by an angry mob and is no more, but noooooooooo. What is it with the laziness of today's citzenry?
