Believe me when I say I'm not trying to catch hell from the ladies of the FB with this one, but I had a Contracts professor who treated the men in her class like second class citizens, made snide remarks to them, put down their comments in class excessively, etc.

At the beginning of our 2nd semester with her she took it upon herself to read a portion of the final exam with the best grade in the class from first semester. When she finished she asked whose it was, and a guy friend of mine raised his hand (it was well done, creative and actually entertaining). Shocked, she responds with "Oh, I was hoping a woman wrote it...". Stunned silence. Worst grade I got in law school. She also taught Feminist Jurisprudence, BTW, NTTAWWT.

Most unintentionally funny comment came from an adjunct professor who taught Pre-Trial Litigation. Big-time plaintiff's tort lawyer --

Was telling us about the work schedule he keeps... Said he works 15 hour days six days a week and a half day on Sundays.

It was all I could do not to burst out laughing when he started the next sentence -- "My THIRD wife..."

I would say the bending over was pretty bad, but the worst was when one called me late at night to ask me to meet him so we could "discuss my paper." I didn't go.
Although it hasn't been proven, I am among those who believe that Professor (and residential college dean) James Van de Velde killed his student Suzanne Jovin at Yale in December 1998.

http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=357

A female student once told me that he hit on her in a creepy way (not that there's an uncreepy way for a prof/dean to hit on a student).

That is a good question too. Is it ever ok for a student to sleep with a prof?

If the student is in the prof's class? Would it be ok after the class is over? Is it ok if the student never takes a class with that prof?

I knew some law school profs who married students who had been in their classes, but it was after the fact.

I guess if the grading is anonymous that is one thing, as long as no one feels forced into it. But when grading isn't anonymous I don't see how the professor could ever really be fair. He or she would feel the need to either be too easy or too hard on the person.

I also think I would look at it differently depending on the age of the student. A law student is probrably more able to deal with a situation like this.

The prof that called me was in undergrad and it freaked me out. The dropping things and flirting I must admit, I rather enjoyed. It was a nice way to pass the class. I never acted on it of course, and she never pushed the issue. If I had I have no idea whether she would have slept with me or freaked out that I finally responded to her. I think she was married too. I am not sure.

I don't think you said anything to deserve hell Aloha. If men can be sexist pricks so can women. I have had female profs treat male students better and I have had them treat female students better. Either way, it sucks.

A (married) law-school professor of mine totally hit on me while he was my teacher, which I thought was rather inappropriate. At first I thought maybe I was reading too much into his "friendliness" but later found out that another student ended up filing a complaint against him (not sure of the particulars, but there was definitely some "procedure" taken) for similar behavior. (Eventually found out he had something of a reputation for that kind of thing...)

I would say there's a combination ethics/intelligence quotient to this question.

If there is any chance of an imbalanced-power relationship due to the student-prof thing, I would call it unethical.

Just generally, I would call it stupid, on the prof's side. Too much opportunity to get screwed.

The wrong way, I mean.

One of my law school classmates married a professor after we graduated. I was in the class where they met, and I don't think that their romance had any impact on grading though she may have gotten extra help with studying. I didn't have any problem with their romance, but I did think it was a little over the top to have him get up to hood her during the graduation ceremony.

I can't remember any really inappropriate behavior from professors when I was in any of my various schools. I drank a lot with some of them, but there was nothing that really stands out as inappropriate or really wild.

Come to think of it, he was probably Jewish, and therefore probably circumscised, so that may be the wrong verb.

much opportunity to get screwed by incoming groups of co-eds every year is one of the prime benefits of being a professor. that and summers off.
of course, for propriety's sake, one should start teaching grad courses after turning 35.

Look, I'll agree with you that when Sidd said, "There's no way I'm touching that," it was a tad indelicate. But that's no reason to get quite so defensive.

Contraceptives

If there were a contraceptive out there that
  • is completely non-surgical.
  • is long-lasting, can be effective for at least 10 years.
  • has no side effects more worrisome than a slight swelling.
  • works. (has been only one unplanned pregnancy -- and in that instance, the birth control wasn't administered properly.) and
  • is reversible.

would the men of the board be willing to try it? would the women of the board be willing to trust someone who said they were on it?

Sure, but not until they release the reversal antidote, and confirm it works. Otherwise it would be like getting stuck in one of those shrinking machines that then gets destroyed. Oh the humanity.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/06/fashion/06FASH.html

[Fur most popular among under-35 set, so long as it isn't "Dynasty" fur.]

Also, not that this has been news for about 2 years, but pashmina must be totally out because they are being remaindered on e-bay for $9.99 per or less (the cashmere 30x80 inch ones), which is now officially cheaper than I can pick up a fake acrylic one in Chinatown. (OK, maybe not with S&H, but still.) However, if you're still looking for an airplane snuggly, I suggest heading over there. There's almost no competition with the holidays just past.

We women are so lucky that none of the methods of birth control that we have used over the years have done any harm or carried any risks.
