Response to Atticus on the Early Church Atticus, you know a lot about a bunch of things but I don't think you've got it right on the early church. [QUOTE]Originally posted by Atticus Grinch The essential validity of that point is drowned in the hyperbole in which it is stated. There was no seperate thing called "Christianity" for probably 150 years or so after the death (or not-death, natch) of the man who came to be called Jesus. /QUOTE] Don't know whether the faith was called Christianity, but the followers of Jesus were called Christians much earlier. Flavius Josephus (~37 A.D. to 100 A.D.) was a Jewish historian. His description of Jesus noted that his followers were called Christians. Tactitus and Suetonius, early 2nd Century A.D. historians also refer to them as being called Christians. And Pliny the Younger (62?-c.113 AD) wrote a letter to the emperor discussing his treatment of "Christians."** Quote:
The very early church wasn't about political parties. It was all about the message of salvation. I don't think it got political until the church was much more established as Christianity. **N.B. if you thought the New Testament was the only historical evidence for the existence of Jesus as a historical person. Fu(Christianity Timmy)gee Edited to note that I have never heard anyone call someone a Jewess, much less a Jewess girl. |

Help! The Job on DVD Quote:
Second, I had that feeling I had watching MIkey call the answring machine on swingers. third, I was watching my office dvd last night after that boring yankees game. Is it my disc or is it impossible to tell which setting is highlighted (ie "watch episodes in order" "choose an episode" "select a scene")? And the first track on episode four, where Dawn has a meltdown and Tim offers to marry her snot, skips. I am so bummed. I lost my receipt too. fourth- is NBC actually in the process of bringing this show to the US? I think they could do it if they changed it drastically and didnt try to just carbon copy the characters and the script. maybe. though I dont know if they could find anyone as ugly as Gareth over here. Is Less available? There is some resemblance. fifth. I had a weird deja rerun. I have seen about five minutes of US Coupling and five minutes of Brit coupling, and the were the same five minutes about the interview and the vulva. that was fucking weird. both were totally unfunny. but if good morning miami can still be onthe air, i dont see couupling getting cancelled bc it couldnt be worse than that show. |

Poor Sap If there is anyone in the world I wouldn't want to be today (or especially tomorrow if the Cubs lose tonight), it's this guy: http://espn-ak.starwave.com/media/ml.../a_cubs_ft.jpg Clearly he's a Cubs fan. Obviously he did something stupid. But damn, they didn't have to throw beer all over him repeatedly after he fucked the game up for the Cubs. I'm sure he feels bad enough as it is. And the Cubs fucked the game up on their own after that. They were still in a position to win. I really hope they win tonight, because he's going to go down as a bigger goat than Bill Buckner if they don't, no matter how many errors the Cubs commit. TM |

Not being a Cubs fan, that game still left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. I think subconciously I'm rooting for them, but I won't say it IRL. What an awful way to lose. Alex Gonzalez is the true culprit, and Prior made some bad pitches, but that fan will be the scapegoat. Luckily for him, he wasn't at a White Sox game, where he would have been murdered on the spot, unless they wanted to torture him first. |
