There is an exception to the whiny vocal thing: The Secret Machines.

This band has a whiny emo vocalist, but the behind him is a killer rhythm section and the have this super-heavy Floydy/Zeppeliny/Sabbathy wall of sound sound.

Great band. Just avoid their second album. It's their "keyboard" record and it's shit.

I like Interpol and Franz Ferdinand (well, at least their first record) because the bands are tight enough and the music good enough that I can excuse the vocal affectations.

But if you're talking Brit pop, my favorite is the Libertines and the solo projects and side bands their chief members created, Dirty Pretty Things and even some of the Babyshambles stuff. Doherty was a disaster, but that band had a knack for putting out really infectious stuff. "Up The Bracket" is a top twenty album of the past decade. Not exactly whiny Brit pop, but pretty damn close, and really exceptional material.

High Anxiety is on HBO this month. I just watched it. (Yes, I know, rockin' Sat night.) Very, very funny. However, although I saw it when it 1st came out, I am not sure I would want to explain some of the references to my 7 year old.

Great game (Fourth-quarter lead changes were reminiscent of last year's game)

So-so commercials (Anytime the e-trade baby is in the running for best commercial, you know it's a weak year. Same goes for making Danica Patrick the main course of cheesecake.)

Was surprised that President Obama was on the pregame show with Matt Lauer.

Here's to a future Superbowl broadcast with Cris Collinsworth doing color. There does not need to be that many studio analysts. There probably doesn't need to be half that many studio analysts.

Generally the commercials were not memorable. The Mean Joe Green Coke remake was pretty funny. That was the best way to make a nod to the classic commecial but not just remake it for the sake of updating it.

I only watched the last 3 minutes of the game and the halftime show. The rest I taped and fast forwarded through to the commercials. I got excited when Larry Jr. (Larry Sr. is a sports reporter here) made the touchdown with 2:35 to go. Sad the Cards defense couldn't stop the Pittsburgh offense though that was some excellent football.

They may not be the greatest movies but boys often like Hook (it's the whole kids beating adults deal) and George of the Jungle (the Brendan Fraser one)

I second BnB's recommendation the the classic Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies.

So, I had two sheets with Superbowl boxes. One with 0/6 (Steelers/Cards) and one with 6/3 (Steelers/Cards).

Three minutes to go. Cards pin Steelers on the 1. Holy crap. If they get a safety, final score could be 20-16, giving me a large payoff. Sure enough, safety!

Now, I just need a hold. Come on Steelers Defen...wait. No! Don't throw to Fitzgerald! Fuck. Tackle him. Noooooo! Shit. Now it's 23-20.

Okay. If the Cards hold the Steelers to a field goal in this last drive and it goes to overtime, I have a great chance to win on my second sheet.

A little. Not in judgmental way, I could go for a hit of that bad bong too, but more from the olympic/olympic calibre athletes I have known over the years, most tend to be fairly straightlaced on non-alcohol based substances, and even on the booze most are fairly tame. Nature of the beast....there are not many down days and its tough to put in a 3...4...5..plus day at a high physical effourt after a night out. And constant excess levels of dopamine are good on their own.

I had occasion to watch the play version of SoM about 20 times in January, and let me say that the play's version of 16 going on 17 is the most sexist, double entendre, piece of shit song I've ever seen performed on stage.

Other than that, it's a good show.

I checked out covers.com before the game, and it recommended placing a bet on Santonio Holmes winning the MVP, which was +1500!

Of course, bodog would not let us deposit any more money into the account. They used to accept American credit cards, but no longer.

The snowboarders told the IOC that if they get tested for TCH, they weren't even going to consider showing up. The IOC wisely let the issue drop.

Really? I don't recall the specifics one way or the other, but, from what I know of the IOC, and this comes second hand from people who were involved in the lobbying/application to get triathlon in the olympics, they are (or were-back 10-15 years ago) totally tight assed autocratic douchebags who could could scarcely give a rat's arse about secondary sports, like triathlon....or snowboarding (at that time)(especially secondary sports invented by Americans).

Maybe it was the difference between the Canadian olympic committee versus the American Olympic committee.

It pisses me off greatly that the IOC accepted an apology from Michael Phelps on the pot thing. They should be kissing his ass, not the other way around.
