Let's see how snobby this place actually is: has anyone here ever worn a jersey to a sporting event? I haven't and don't intend to do so. Jerseys are for players. And football jerseys look ridiculous without shoulder pads (unless they're the tight-fitting jerseys made for women - I like those).

Whenever I go to a hockey game involving the Toronto Maple Leafs, I wear my jersey/sweater. "Gotta support the team"*

Hey! My grandmother was from Monroe. And she was a true southern belle. Refused to wear pants (softball for Hank). Only dresses/skirts. Ladies don't wear pants. Insisted on cooking 7 courses for each meal. Grandchildren were not allowed to say we were "full" at the dinner table. Klassy.

My grandfather used to refill the bottle of Canadian Club with well whiskey when grandma and the girls had bridge night.

For some reason, hockey sweaters don't bother me that much. Maybe that's b/c I love hockey fans. Much more than I like hockey itself. No fans care more.

as to your theses here, I'm not sure society's reaction to drugging and anally raping a 13 year old has changed all that much since the 70s.

I think you're wrong. I think there was a lot of sentiment at the time that you have this sexually promiscuous girl who gets "set up" with Polanski by her mother so she can get a step up in show business. She takes nude photos, gets drunk, takes drugs, and hops in the jacuzzi with him. I think there was probably legitimate concern on the part of the prosecutor that a jury in the 70s would have thought that she had what was coming to her. These days, thanks to rape shield laws and other evidentiary changes, the defense would be prohibited from from further victimizing the victim in the same way. Her identity would be protected, she may not even have to have a face-to-face confrontation with the rapist. It is doubtful that the fact she was not a virgin would come in. The changes in laws alone reflect a significant change in societal attitudes.

do you know one main reason statutory rape laws still exist? it's for situations where it's an actual rape. "she dressed like a whore, and got in the hot tub?" "and how old was she when she dresed like a whore and got in the hot tub?" "ummmm..." none of that is a defense. she was 13? you are guilty.

i don't see anyone raising a question about whether he'd have been found innocent or guilty back then- he admits guilt- and all of the crap that might have been thrown at the girl ina trial in the 1970s would have been thrown at her in a Rape. trial. in. the 70s. it was a crime then, or there wouldn't have been that whole trial thing to worry about, right?

No, nor have I ever attended a game with someone wearing a jersey. I have worn a pro cap to a college game, but it was given to me by the owner of the pro team, so my snob quotient is maintained.

I was seated in front of a man wearing his son's jersey, which was perfectly acceptable, and one of my friends has worn her husband's jersey to see him play, specially tailored to show off her breasteses, for which he also paid.

I think you pulled your statement about the main reason why statutory rape laws exist out of your ass, but whatever.

Your second paragraph is a little hard to understand due to your usual level of writing clarity, but the point is this: He got his initial sentence, which to us seems ridiculously lenient, in part because different laws and attitudes at the time gave the prosecutor what was probably a legitimate concern that he would walk. So he pleads to that sentence, and then the judge sees the Oktoberfest photo, reneges on the deal, begins acting completely erratically, and suddenly Polanski thinks, not only am I screwed if stick with my plea, but if I go to trial, I will have to go to trial with this guy as my judge.

Of course rape was a crime but the victim didn't want to testify and her parents didn't want her to testify because the defense was going to vilify her and make her look like a tramp who was lying. I suspect the prosecutors offered such a sweetheart deal because they worried about getting a conviction, 13-year-old victim or not.

I've never claimed to be snobby, so I believe my non-snob cred is maintained when I say I have worn a jersey to several football games. Juniors large. I have also gone to a football game (NFC Championship, baybee!) that was way WAY too cold for it to matter what I was wearing under the parka and snowpants. To that one I wore a team logo ski cap. I also bought Mr. Man an Aaron Rodgers jersey the day Fav-RE signed with the Vikings. And I've seen him wear it. Not to a game. Yet.

I wear a mens DeMeco Ryans replica jersey to most games and have for the last two or so years. My boyfriend is usually in a Steve Slaton jersey, though sometimes he wears an Shaun Rogers jersey if (a) we're playing the Browns, (b) we're playing the Ravens, or (c) the Texans have a bye. I'd say a good quarter to a third of the fan population in and around the Texans stadium during game time is in some sort of jersey.

A good chunk of that population has more than one jersey, because the Texans have themed color games (last week was "Battle Red" day (sponsored by Haliburton)) where the fans are instructed to wear whatever color the team is wearing that day. My jersey is blue, so I wore a battle red day tee shirt that Haliburton gave me when I walked into the stadium a few years back. I'd say 80 percent of the fanbase wore red of some sort last week. (To no positive effect....)

I don't really care about looking rediculous. Our seats are near the crazy, crazy fan section, so we're never going to stand out.

My best friend got me a personalized jersey with my last name and the year we were born on as a "congratulations for getting a team back" present when the Texans were first announced. I wore it to a few games in the early years, but I haven't pulled it out in awhile.

To a sporting event? No. While watching a sporting event? Yes, although I was a kid and it wasn't one of the fancy "authentic" kind you get now.

That said, I was recently given an Adrian Peterson jersey, which I would likely wear if I were going to a Vikings game.

I went to a Browns-Texans game in Browns stadium in what I would consider sub-arctic temperatures last year. I was instructed to wear no Texans gear and I got shushed a few times when things went well for the Texans for fear of my (and his) personal safety. I wore a blue ski cap with the logo of a presidential nominee instead. Coincidently, the blue of the ski cap matched exactly the team colors.

Packers fans have been overwhelmingly nice to me when I've worn Giants gear into their stadium. Even though the Giants won both games. Far nicer than San Diego or Seattle fans. We'll be at the Packers-Lions game in a couple of weeks and I'm really hoping that the Pack win because I'm very close to being banned from Lambeau by Mr. Man's family.

I wear my black Eagles long sleeved tee every time the Eagles play except for pre-season. I wore it to the Superbowl. I considered burning it after the NFC championship last year.

Not to the game but on the way out, by which time all the body paint has gotten pretty smeary and it's usually damn cold.

Texans fans are generally pretty nice to opposing players. The guys who sit behind us live in San Antonio and come in for four games a year. They sell the others on Stub Hub so it's not uncommon for fans from the other team to sit right behind us. Our favorites last year were the Miami fans who said "we can still lose this" as they were ahead by ten with two and a half minutes to go, and we started arguing about which team was more likely to choke. They were right. They lost it. Those guys singlehandedly changed my boyfriend's opinion of Miami fans. He HATED them when he lived in Miami in the early 90s.

The Bears fans were annoying as hell, and I was glad that we killed their playoff hopes in that game.

Part of the joy of going to Sox/Yankees games is the crowd interaction. There are always some NYers who show up itching for trouble. It's kind of like Friday on the Board.

Since then the only time I have heard of St. rape being charged was for a 17 y.o. black kid who had consenual sex with his 15 white gf in Ms. and drew 20 years, AND times when the crime was an actual rape. So I'll stand by my statement.

I may have told this story before, so if I have, please forgive me. (Or, if you are TM, mock me.)

When I was a summer associate, we were treated to an outing at Fenway for a Sox/Yankees game. We had the seats up on the roof on the first base line. In about the 5th innning, two guys got in a fight that wound up with one guy hanging the other guy over the railing, which, had he dropped him, would have resulted in an unpleasant 5-ish story fall.

Best thing about the whole thing was noticing that all the players on the field had stopped playing to turn around and watch the fight.

Although at Sox/Cubs gamse, it's almost always the visting fans that are most likely to be trouble--at one game on the southside, the only obnoxiousness* was from Cubs fans.

*Apart from numerous Sox fans with offensive shirts--but I put that down to their limited grasp of written english.
