That chick needs to write a book of reviews.

ETA: And get herself an Ebert (circa 1995).

Her review of Babies is also pretty good, but in a different way.

But almost every other place we visited and almost all the other people we interacted with while in Paris were very pleasant.

That said, I almost had to beat the hell out of some jackass French wannabe thug on the Metro who sat right next to the door with his legs sticking straight out so everyone entering had to step over them. So, I kicked his legs as I stepped over them. He nudged me and said something "tough" in French (and I think it might be impossible to sound hard in French). I told him to move his fucking legs (in English, of course). He got loud, but didn't get up, so I went to sit down. He continued to talk shit at the top of his lungs without looking at me. At his stop, he kept it up, looking at me. I made the international sign for "You're all talk" as he walked out with his punk ass thug firend, which made him get louder. But he passed my door without doing a fucking thing. I had to laugh at him. The doors remained open for a bit and I figured that was that. But after they closed, he tried to spit at me through the window and hit someone else. Unbelievable. There were two of them, they had plenty of opportunity and all they could do was spit. Fucking surrender monkeys.

eta: By the way, Paris must be the popped-collar, sweater-tied-around-your-neck capital of the world. Never have I seen so many good looking women with douchebags in my life. Also, there are hardly any fat people in Paris, which is weird after spending so much time visiting places in the US.

There are tons (pun intended) of fat people in Paris. The cheese-eating surrender monkey police don't let them on the Champs-Elysee, though.

Also, I am a sucker for a french-speaking woman.

There is a support group for this. It's called "Everyone" and we meet at the bar.*

*This is a lie. We meet in my basement and watch old Emmanuelle movies I taped from Cinemax.

it's not the thugs you have to fear.

first time there we flew in after a few days in amsterdam, where we had an attempted mugging from wanna be thugs. a guy held me and another was punching me in the mouth for a while before I got loose* and it didn't even cut my lip, I mean shit-

anyway we arrived in Paris with a big chip on our shoulders. one day a crowd of kids, like 8-12 years old, came running up to us. a boy had a magazine and was jabbering pointing at a picture, they started to surround us and the wife and I both swatted at them. they moved on. w/o the pre-mugging I think we would have stopped to hear them out.

once back I read that gypsies kids were being sent out in those groups. once you stop they swarm and pick your pockets, all the while the tourist is smiling at the cute little kids. turns out you can do anything in France before you're 15 and no jail, so they all retire at 15.

*and as to my lack of street smarts, all I can say is it seemed like cartoon land and we had just closed out the milky way, so, you know?

I've met Atticus and I'm quite certain his man cave is as pretty as Thurgreed's princess bed after the ruffle has been freshly ironed.

but you know if you visit the first thing he'd show off would be the heated, computer controlled toilet he had installed

Commercial interruption.....

As it appears the board is temporarily dead, I thought it might be worth mentioning that the series box set of The Wire (DVD not Bluray) is the Amazon Gold Box deal of the day -- $89.99

I have thus far been able to talk myself out of buying it but it has been a battle.

And now I return the board to deadness.
