Sometimes, though, it's better to just get up early and run the race first thing, so you can make it to work at 9.

If you're on the course before the course is open, that's just going for a run.

But, no, I'm not running.

I think I might start running again. Not to qualify for Boston (no way, no how), but just to run.

Too bad the major conflict for which they were ultimately trained involved more closed-head injuries and TBI than GSWs.

When my woo-woo friends talk about the wisdom of Eastern medicine, I always ask them which hemisphere they'd rather need a trauma medic in. Ain't no herbal cure for yesterday's horror.

Yeah, it's not as bad as it was in the 90s, but there is no place I'd rather go if I were shot than the Ben Taub ER in Houston (though I'm affiliated with its competitor).

And I dunno. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in both pain management and stress relief. I suspect that the victims and first responders suffer from both.

Eastern medicine ain't so good for trauma. But it can be superb for long-term health, including recovery from trauma.

In other words, you want a surgeon to set the bone and stop the bleeding, but you might want an acupuncturist or herbal doc to help the bone knit faster.

I say this as someone from a family of doctors, brought up to reject all "non-traditional" medicine, complete skeptic.... and after shattering my leg in a car accident and learning that the bones were not healing after six months, was willing to try something else. My ortho surgeon was shocked at how quickly I healed after that, and a number of other medical problems were cleared up. And when my bones were reset, early on, the herbal meds for the pain were stunningly effective (and by that time I'd taken virtually every pain med on the planet).

ETA: I acknowledge that anyone who deems any person who talks about the effectiveness of eastern medicine as a "woo-woo friend" will not be convinced, but don't blame the speaker for your deaf ears or closed mind.

Since Chicago is a late marathon, a BQ there in 2012 qualifies you for 2013 and 2014. So I'm qualified for next year, but I don't know if I'll run it.

I tried acupuncture for my hip issues and found it did nothing at all for me, but ART by my chiropractor has been a godsend.

Sorry. Wasn't trying to brag. If it helps I would not have qualified if were under 35.

Let me be clear. If I qualified for Boston, I'd have my BQ time tattooed on my forehead.

Brag away, my friend.

What is ART?

I tried a chiropractor and hated it -- he was just too brutal, I thought he was going to snap my spine. Tried another and just thought he was a prick.

I've also been to acupuncturists and I didn't like or respect -- probably more than the opposite. The problem is, it's pretty easy to become one. The guy who worked on my leg was 70, grew up in China, parents were Chinese doctors, began studying at age 10....
