We've had some feral hog problems for the first time this year, and our solution has generally been to stay the fuck away. The dogs aren't too happy about having to stay inside when we see the hogs in the field, but everyone's safer that way.

The babies are kinda cute, though.

We've had feral hog problems for decades. They will destroy acres of good pasture in just a few months. You may want to be a bit more active in dealing with them or they will set up camp and stay.

Choose your weapon carefully. Those things don't drop easily and they tend to get mad when shot.

For as long as I can remember they are the only justification for keeping a gun in the truck at all times. Snakes are a necessary part of the ecosystem, in most cases. Javelina are OK if smoked long enough, but are a bit lean for sausage. Everything else you may want to shoot has a season. Feral hogs are a nuisance and our neighbors would consider us negligent if if we didn't keep them at bay.

Feral hogs taste more like domesticated pig than wild boar because they are domesticated pigs that have gone feral. Good filler for venison sausage.

Do we even use pasture anymore? I thought we fed all livestock bushel after bushel of corn.

You just have to be at least a mid-timer, newb. [insert tension breaking emoticon here]

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

I'm not a rancher, just a property owner. The guy who runs cattle on our land runs cattle on several thousand acres in the area and makes out a decent living.

My understanding is that they raise the cattle to a certain age and then take them to a feed lot to be fattened, by the method you mention, before butchering.

Most of the beef in our freezer actually comes from another part of the state where another family member raises a few calves every year and lets us buy one at a bit under market price. They never see a feed lot and go straight from pasture (with some hand feeding) to butchering. Due to the drought this summer he sold the calves early on when his pasture was hurting and the cost of feed and hay sky rocketed. Luckily the acorn harvest looks good so the deer should be fat in a few weeks.

Were those first five months that spectacular?

Obviously, I should have paid more attention over the last 6 years. I too want to throw up a bit in my mouth.
