In Fresno, a father is being prosecuted for felony mayhem for giving his 7-year-old son a gang tattoo. Defense says it's no more painful or disfiguring than circumcision or infant ear piercing.

BTW, about your avatar, it looks to me like the aspect ratio was stretched vertically, giving the illusion of narrower hips and a longer torso without retouching. NTTAWWT.

My parents and brother have been there on separate trips in the last five years. Both groups said that Rio is fine, but Sao Paolo is just awful in terms of air quality. There's a lot of dirt and trash and poverty in parts of Rio, but my guess is that those parts of town aren't exactly going to be highlighted.

If it's like most Olympic cities, they will ush many of the poor and dirty people out of neighborhoods, tear their shanties down to build new dorms for the athletes, and not let the poor folk use the dorms for shelter when the crowd leaves town.

Cool story, and interesting (except for the use of a videotape to capture the TV).

But you missed the more important link on that site.

beijing did. did atlanta or athens? is london doing that?

beijing residents at first were pretty pleased because the subway system was finally expanded to get ready for the games- then they got unhappy when the neighborhoods started to be torn down, or at least hidden- then a few million people were ordered to leave the city.

I can only speak for when I was there, but that was in the month of August so I consider myself an expert - air pollution was not bad, probably because it is right on the ocean. However, there is a lot of human detritus.

Seriously. I know these guys aint geniuses, but if you are aware of someone tipping, you can actually take advantage of it. If you change things up, they'll be tipping the wrong pitches.

That, and by making "1" a curve-ball and "2" a fastball (but hopefully much more complex).

I was thinking of LA and Atlanta, where I am given to understand it has occurred. It sounds like you're saying it happens outside the US as well, at least in Beijing?

Rio will do something about its favelas (shantytown slums), but it will have to be a monumental effort, given that up to 1 million people live there in 500 different slums. http://www.macalester.edu/courses/ge...d/thefavel.htm

beijing got rid of many hutongs, and i think 1,000,000 people easily were in them. What was worse is that they built walls along the major highways to hide the existence of many others.

but hutongs were simply traditional neighborhoods. they weren't "slums" at least in context of the rest of the city.

I don't see walls b/t "major highways" and residential areas as necessarily objectionable; they're quite common around the US. But I had thought that they built walls b/t ordinary city streets--with sidewalks, bike lanes, etc--and the residential areas. You're talking about the latter, right?

the commercial highways that would have visitors travelling on them- not the expressways.

these are neighborhoods full of tight streets and alleys, and include shops and homes. shop owners near touristy places were looking forward to some increased business and suddenly, a wall separated them from where people might be.

if one walked (and I did) there were doors back into the hutongs. the restaurants there were the only places they kept the "normal" menus ARF! ARF!

Did I miss the discussion this morning, or was Letterman's reveal about the extortion and sexing of his staff pretty surreal? The clips made it sound like the audience thought it was a gag until close to the end, and then they applauded like it was the best joke ever. If you're in the audience, how can you react with applause for anyone involved?
