You guys don't remember this? For the first half dozen years or so of this board, I ranted and raved against that law and openly defied it.

I remember. Civil disobedience at its finest. You are our Ghandiji.

I remember it. At one point, I believe you advocated open carry.

This may be the one instance in which concealed carry is actually less polite.

My friend who once worked for AVN reviewing dildos and other assorted toys goes by the Playa name Plaid. I wonder if she got the name through your joke.

Openly? Too easy.

There are many, many things about this job that stress me out. Writing stuff down on a green sheet, which results pretty directly in me getting money, isn't one of them.

Of the myriad grievances I had with the nature of the legal business model, keeping time was a top three annoyance. It's all about being constantly disciplined and conscientious, which is seriously fucking boring. The work itself is detailed enough. Who the fuck wants to try to rewind several hours of phone calls and emails from several people, and paper creation, to submit a pre-bill? Particularly when most of the work is done in furious bursts so one can get back to reading stuff like... this board. Hmmm... How much time would such a motion cost if like a good, slow, methodical worker bee drafted it?

Alternatively, like one guy I knew who did his all of bills three days before the end of the month - recreating his time from docs created and phone logs - it's "Brian Williams" billing.

Life's mundane enough. No one needs the added insult of keeping a log of all the mostly pointless and inconsequential things on which he's dicked away half his waking hours.

Yeah, if only we all had the cohones to just send Wachtell bills to everyone. I-bankers did it with the "Lehman" formula, aka the double Lehman, aka the Lehman-with-a-twist-and-a-double-axel. The presence of a big cheese's name on the formula and the fact that the whole industry did it helped make it stick.

Rumor around the VC world here is that Jack Levin once sent a client a 7-figure bill with the simple descriptor "value added."

Jack is great. Second only to Marty in the pantheon of tax lawyers imho. I assume the client paid it.

I used to love the breakfasts at the end of the taxapalooza sessions I attended back in the 90s, before I left tax, when Jack and the gang dirtied whiteboards. Only once did I actually venture to the whiteboard....

Re the conversation we have had about religion and the causes of violence, this book review is two months old but I just saw it yesterday and thought it was very good.

I was not only at the white board, I was pulled up there by Mark Silverman, Levin's heir in the Tax Section. I'm counting that toward my 15 minutes.

No, no, baby - this ain't living.

I could be wrong, but one example of the (alleged) bad things done by the bank described in this article could be a case of where Big Data was used to help the bank racially discriminate by "steering." http://www.propublica.org/article/ho...source=twitter

On my whiteboard time, Silverman told me he learned something. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a 337(b)(2)(B) issue involving the restructuring of a hospital network. I felt the same rush I felt when Joey Ramone bled on me.

Ah, memories....
