It's been an emotional week and it's a new world out there.

And in here, too.

All bad. Not necessarily all AQ "sleeper cell."

Of course there are other sources of bad guys but the type of bombs, how they were detonated, where, why, the planning, the history of the suspects religious beliefs all led me to the correct conclusion that these two were part of a muslim sleeper cell. Brothers don't go rogue together without idealogical underpinnings.

This looks much more like the DC snipers than any AQ attack.

That is helpful, thanks. There are a lot of things about this whole mess that make little sense. My guess is that the brains behind the operation is the dead one.

A friend in Boston tells me that they didn't actually rob the convenience store. In a continuance of "this is the most fucked up week ever, even for terrorist assholes," they just happened to have been in it when the store was being robbed, and that's when the MIT officer got involved. I imagine they were IDed, panicked, and started shooting.

I also heard that they didn't rob the store, but were photographed in it. Don't think the MIT cop was responding -- an MIT cop wouldn't go to Central Square. Heard they just shot him in cold blood.

To you, maybe:

Maret Tsarnaeva told reporters at a press conference on Friday in Toronto that her nephew Tamerlan recently went from praying no more than once a day to praying five times a day. A neighbor and family friend in Cambridge said Tamerlan became a devout Muslim within the past few years.

“He started talking about religion,” said the family friend, who asked not to be identified. “He grew a long beard.”

The friend said Tamerlan urged him to be more observant, asking, “Why don’t you become a better Muslim? Why don’t you pray, why don’t you do your Islamic duties?”

I don't see how that's inconsistent.

A few things that make this look not much like an AQ thing: they didn't kill themselves, having not killed themselves they didn't seem to have any further plan to escape or otherwise, the attack was relatively simpe and uncoordinated, they are Russian speaking Chechens (perhaps also Shia, which I saw mentioned but may be wrong).

Things that make it look like it might be an AQ "sleeper cell:" they are Muslim.

The fact that they seem to have recently become more religiously intense may suggest jihadist motivations, but the recent ness of that intensity looks more like recent recruitment than "sleep cell" to me, although we may be using those words differently.

No, just an odd coincidence, I guess. But keep in mind your logic is flawed. He IS a terrorist.

Good points about the lack of suicidal intentions and lack of escape plans. Recent recruitment may be the correct way of putting this then. More like Johnny Walker types -- with training and support -- than full blown fundamentalists.

That being said maybe it is time this gets moved to the PB.

Yeah. What with all the killing and hate and turmoil in this world, the last thing we want to encourage is spirituality. Muslim doesn't equal bloodthirsty terrorist. Remember, we all worship the God of Abraham.

As it happens, the Russian mob, Muslim Separatists in Chechnya and Russia, and Al Qaeda have all been engaged in internecine trade in heroin, money, weapons, girls, boys, and joint training for years. But as of yet, the proof the connection exists here is, at this point, non-existent.
