And in return for doing this they get?

So assuming that the answer to the above questions it nothing, then how do people become moderators? Does RT threaten them with bodily harm or something? Kidnap a family member? And who is threatening RT?

Is there a difference between being a moderator and being a victim of extortion or blackmail?
They do it for the glamour. Moderators get all the chicks.

Moderators have some administrative powers, including (most notably) the power to edit other people's posts. This is most often an issue when people say something outable, although as time has gone by this is less so. Copyright has been an issue in the past, too, and also the posting of NSFW material. There is some expectation on the admins' parts that mods will pay attention to what's happening on the boards.

In return, we get the gratitude of people like Hank (who, I should note, has donated quite a bit to the boards as well).

Years ago people volunteered to moderate. Penske and Ty both do. There's no requirement for posting, and limited requirement for monitoring, especially since this is all generally uncensored. In theory one can edit or delete a post; in practice, woe be unto the moderator who does.
Paigow and I tried to be the mods for the old Spanky board, but we were deemed poor candidates.

Now that you mention it, I did get a steaming hot internet girlfriend out of the gig. Or maybe I landed her because of my winning personality.

Another benefit, we are harder to ignore. :D

It's lines like this that keep bringing me back to the Boards.

Other than be a strong advocate/hatchet man for the Strong Executive and being one of Ron's longest running advisors, I don't recall anything much.

Unless the FedSoc wants to celebrate his fight against pornography. Which alone disqualifies him from admiration around here, I think.

Well, they should at least invite someone with a differing viewpoint. Having Ed Meese describe his own legacy seems a bit much.

The thing I best remember Ed Meese for, aside from his obssession with pronography, is his observation that "if they [meaning anyone charged with a crime] weren't guilty, they wouldn't be defendants."

Interesting viewpoint for the man charged with protecting the American legal system, no?

That may explain why they are honoring him.

Geez, sensitive much? It was a very off-the-cuff joke.

ETA by "off-the-cuff" I mean softball. It was too easy.
