Wrong. Watch Italy. Or don't. It is painful.

0-0 might.

Pizza Hut is apparently awarding free pizzas in Ireland for every goal scored against France.

A bar here is giving free whiskey shots for the same thing. Uruguay is not making many friends right now.

You're wrong. The Italians are swarthy. That's why I'm half swarthy.

Actually, I am told by our soccer expert here that the Portugese are worse.

And, Icky, that is an Uber-FUPA.

Have they discussed replay for flops? After the game, if it's clear that a player falls without being touched, suspend him for the next game. What's so hard about that. It's really not even that subjective.

I've never understood why people get so bent out of shape over flopping. Acting seem to be part of every sport, and if it works, more power to the performance. If it doesn't, then take advantage of the guy pretending to have lost his limb and score while he's trying to convince the ref of other things.

Also, I actually rather enjoyed watching the 1-1 game, regardless of the outcome.

The fact that flopping is now considered good defense is a fucking crime, in any sport. It fucks up the flow of the game, often forces the refs to blow the whistle unnecessarily and is just a pussy thing to do.

I always relate it back to basketball. A charge is a charge whether or not the defensive player hits the floor. A charge is not a charge just because the defensive player hit the floor. Sometimes a charge should be called even if the defensive player is moving. If your goal is to act like you're playing good defense, instead of actually playing good defense, you should be penalized. You should be given a technical every time you flop. That would at least do away with the egregious ones.

The reason why flops are so bothersome is because they're overly used by players who can't really play defense. If Kyle Singler can't stay with his guy, just go jump in the way and fall over! Great defense! No. A charge is meant to penalize an offensive player for being overly aggressive or out of control. It is not an award for a defensive player for beating the offensive player to a spot he anticipated the offensive player was heading to.

Can't say much about soccer, but the highlights where a player is literally not touched, but goes flying as if he's been shot are absolutely embarassing (or should be) to the sport.

TM

Isn't that exactly what it is? If the defensive player establishes a position on the court (regardless of whether he anticipated where the offensive player was going), an offensive player cannot "charge" into him.

Why should an intentional act, designed solely to deceive a referee and serving no other sporting purpose, be tolerated, especially when it sometimes works?

Someone is going to have to post video definition of flopping, because I see instances all the time in various sports where there's some sort of touching (maybe illegal, maybe not) that's emphasized by exaggerated response (fall, flail, declaration of lack of use of limb) by the touch-ee. If there's no touch, yeah, I see a problem, but most of the things I'm thinking about involve some borderline infraction that needed extra attention drawn to it in order to be called a foul.

ETA: and right now, it looks like the French defensive strategy is simply foul the guy and hope the ref doesn't notice. Second yellow card in three minutes.

Turn on the NBA finals and watch Pau Gasol. Within five minutes you'll have an example. Even if four of those minutes are ads.*

*Which, by the way, are less painful to listen to than Mark Jackson. I am increasingly sour on former players as color commentators. They've gotten worse and worse as more players seem to get into the business (more sports on TV?) They routinely rely on cliches without much ability to communicate coherently what the players are thinking. Repeating stupid maxims that coaches might use as a quick reminder (hand down, man down!) really don't add much and, in fact, subtract greatly. Some former players can do it well--they can add value to the broadcast with strategy discussions and observations about the physical difficulty of certain acts. Mark Jackson cannot.
