Why? Where she started says a lot about her and a lot about America. I'm assuming she grew up on a ranch, and as part of that her family did what would be described as manual labour. While there is nothing wrong with manual labour, I think our society places a premium on education and white collar jobs and when someone rises from a background of a family/parents/an earlier incarnation doing manual labour to becoming highly educated and attaining success in a professional non-manual labour environment that is lauded.

Last month several well known publications did series on how class mobility is severely limited if not impossible, i.e. the American dream is dead. I think refuting that by noting examples of how it has been attained and celebrating those examples is a worthwhile thing.

She was a cowgirl. Its not a deragatory term, except in some overly sensitive third parties delusions. Its descriptive. She went from that background to the highest judicial office in the country. If it was me, I would want it brought up in any semi-biographical description of me to serve as an example. It is the American dream, its her life as she portrays it and Bush was right to note it and by noting it celebrate her journey.

The left is so out touch with reality it is scary. This is on par with the DC official who used niggardly in a proper context and had to resign. Get a grip. Although as Spanky noted, its this type of stuff that solidifies the Republican majority.

The skells at Gitmo don't control three branches of government and use them to make speeches about how opressed they are. Bear in mind the stronger the endorsement of religion your government has, the more influence they have in how its practiced. I like the nothing approach, it leaves me free to do what I want, how I want, when I want, and my tax $$ aren't spent on some asshat's 80-ton replica of the 10 commandments or litigation regarding same.

Nope -- it doesn't make any more sense. Liberal Christians what to eliminate church-going from American society? (Church-going Christians want to eliminate Jesus?)

The Christian persecution complex is deeply bizarre. And those who spout it remind me of al-Qaeda -- substitute "the devil Bush" for "liberals" (or "Democrats", or whatever) and "Islam" for "Christ" and you are pretty much there.

The only people who want Christ out of American are the athiests, and that's not who you're talking about. As you complain about religion, you are flat out disrespecting the religious views of a whole lot of people. I prefer my Christ without governmental involvement.

I prefer my Christ washed down with some wine, I mean, those wafers always stick to the back of my throat like a fly on a flypaper. Although when I say "wine" I don't mean that blood of Christ brand, I want something a little spicier, a little oakier, more body, maybe a Walla Walla Cab?

Don't let the seeming youth of this wine put you off, it's intended as a positive and is. That's because this blend of 76% syrah and 24% Grenache bursts with sappy, fresh fruit and is wrapped in a texture that invites drinking with summer meals. While it is not a light wine, at 14.5% alcohol, there is bright quality that I do not find in many Washington syrah based wines.

No. I was distinguishing "church-going christians" - who may or may not be liberal - from these CINOs (Christians in Name Only) who love to proclaim that they are lapsed Catholics or Methodists or whatever, but they don't go to church, don't beleive in God, think Christianity is a joke, etc. And notwithstanding the history of this country (and the actual history behind the First Amendment), get your god out of here.

Oh, and please don't kick the Koran, it's a "sacred" book.

It's funny. Because I see Christianity as a big punching bag, which anyone and everyone is able to pummel with critical aplomb .

However, Allah forbid anyone speak poorly publicly about any of the other "mainstream" or non-mainstream religions. The PC police will have you hanged from a Wiccan May Pole.

Explain to me, then - and notwithstanding the Kennedy concurrence - how, according to you, the mere "display" of the Ten Commandments violates the Establishment Clause and disrespects the "religious views of a whole lot of people"?

Last I checked, "disrespect" isn't the concern addressed in the Constitution. And I haven't seen a recent draft of HR 542 "Establishment of the Christian Church of America".
