But this is a joyous musical week. A Stones box set and a knock-off disc full of unreleased Bon Scott-era AC/DC came out in the same week.

What are you saving your money for? Recreational borium enemas?

I'd go with "mail order bride," but I don't think he'd be able to make a decision from the catalog.

True, it is a Chimney Sweep question, but if I like it, he'll like it.

It's obscenely understated -- elegant, gorgeous, with just a hint of fabulousness. In short, I think I love it.

'Tis true.

If you're going to end up old, do it with good booze.

If your ipod headphones give you substandard sound quality, spend a few bucks on some better headphones.

Any recommendations?

Again, the whole childless thing, but when I was a kid I certainly didn't always get what I wanted, in particular the BB gun my dad wouldn't let me have.

I also don't recall ever really wanting the latest fad toy, and I am wondering if that was my doing or my parentls.

(1) I would guess it's because they are relentlessly marketed on TV these days and a couple of kids in her class have them. And they are kind of cute.

(2) No, she does not always get what she wants, but this is a fairly innocuous and harmless toy, and not even all that expensive if it can be found for retail price. (The hamsters can be had for $8 a piece at Walmart). I don't think there is anything wrong with a kid really, really wanting something for the holidays (or for a birthday) and actually getting it, so long as it's not prohibitively expensive or dangerous. Hell, she is six. The "life is hard" lesson can come a little later.

And I found a set, thanks to the handy dandy zhu zhu tracker I mentioned earlier.

This is the FB, which is generally a judgment-free zone where we can discuss what we buy, no matter how ridiculous -- or adorably furry.

For example, I saw a beautiful watch yesterday with black diamonds, which seems absolutely absurd, and like the coolest thing ever.

So, black diamond watch -- yes or no?

I would buy such a watch, which means that no one else probably should.

If it's in your budget and you would wear it enough to not regret the purchase -- go for it.

I didn't think I would like black diamonds, mostly because the first places I saw them were on TV shopping channels. But a jeweler I know has strands of very small faceted black diamond beads and they are stunning. I'd get them if I could afford the $1200/strand price.

There's tons of decent earphones out there, and what works for you depends on your preferences (in ear/over ear/cans) and budget. I've been happy with my Shure e2c's, but I'm pretty sure they've been superseded by at least a model or two, but that tells you they last. They were around $100, but there's no need to get spendy--even $30-50 will be a pretty big upgrade over the stock ipod earphones.

Will you send me the link to that tracker?

I had the Shures and they are truly excellent. I stopped buying them after I kept losing them when I was traveling all the time. I still have the cheaper Sennheiser over ear model that the OM preferred. They were bulkier in the case and more obvious in my bag. Great sound, too.

I always ask the biggest audiophile I know for a rec, so ncs, what is Mr. Man using these days?

Might be an isolated occurance. My wife got the same email, was second in line when she arrived at 7:00am, and bought two zhu zhus* when the store opened at 9:00am. I thought this was too much trouble. I would have paid the 4X Amazon price instead.

*It was one per person. She called a friend who arrived five minutes before 9:00am and cut in line in front of her.

As soon as I saw it, I thought, I will wear this every day forever.

It fits my overall aesthetic: it's subtle and understated, unless you know what you're seeing, and it looks like something I could have inherited from my grandmother like the main piece I wear.

first, generally, all of us (me too) seem rather "spoiled" and so I think it unlikely any of us will raise children who are not at least a bit spoiled. I certainly did not.

the first Christmas my daughter knew she could ask Santa for something, and she will then get it, she was caught up by something called "Baby all Gone." The doll was a simple standard thing. The buzz was in a can of "food" and a spoon. when one sticks the food in the can, something cams a bit of plastic food to appear on the spoon. once the spoon touches the doll's mouth, the food snaps back into the stem of the spoon: "all gone!"

That season BaG was the rage. We had repeated calls with stores where the clerk got to work out their comedy chops: "Baby all Gone"? All gone!"

I heard Target reloads toys tuesday at midnight, so I would drive their every week, but it was never there (this started in November). We considered catalog ordering a replacement can/spoon and adding it to some generic doll, but decided not to.

Giving our daughter the lesson that "it works" is good enough to meet her desires, might someday lead to her being the sort woman that will accept Adder as being acceptable sexual partner material.

in the end, she got a note from Santa promising it will be there soon- then she got 86 other presents.
