Now, where I grew up we had real winter. (You kids, you don't know how lucky you've got it. Now when I was your age ...) Not quite Minneapolis winter, but every year a few people froze to death going to the corner for milk. If I were back there now I'd get a full length fur coat in a second (actually, probably a full length fur lined coat, or a long swing-cut shearling thing). I've never heard of anyone having trouble with PETA there, largely because when it gets cold, it is too cold for anyone to want to go out in anything OTHER than fur so the PETA folk stay inside. |

My family has its coastal lefty faction -- the effete intellectual snobs, if you will -- and its red-state, blue-collar faction -- the folks you might meet in a small town in the Mountain Time Zone. My father is in the former group. We usually avoid talking politics when we all get together, for obvious reasons, but sometimes it just slips out. One of my cousins (in the other faction) has decided to work up a family website, which is cool. At the top of the home page, he's inserted a graphic of a flapping American flag. My father is bent out of shape about this. He sees it as an attempt by my cousin to make a political point. I'm not so sure. I'm not as sure as my dad that the cousin sees the flag in a divisive way, and thinks it's possible that he sees it as something we all share. Said cousin actually lives in a suburb of Seattle, so he should be more attuned to these things than someone who lives in, e.g., a rural area in the Mountain Time Zone uninhabited by liberals, but I just don't know. And I think raising this could be awkward. So, where do you all think this cousin is coming from? |

I did have access (I am SPECIAL). I went to the board. I did not look. Call it what you want. There is no reason to mention it if it isn't true because nobody asked -- I said it to explain a time that I did not take advantage of nekkidness. |

Where I come from there is a shallow section of a major river -- it's maybe a half mile shore to shore and no more than two feet deep for most of it. Everybody takes their little power boats, motors out onto this shoal, drops the cooler and a bunch of lawn chairs into the water, puts the boat's television out the back, and just hangs. You've got to really adjust the contrast and brightness alot, or it's impossible to see anything. |

Actual humor from a David Spade movie
Slip 'N Slide makers sue 'Dickie Roberts'
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The makers of the Slip 'N Slide filed a lawsuit Monday over a scene in the hit movie "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" that shows actor David Spade skidding to a painful halt on the summertime water toy. Wham-O is asking a judge to order the film out of theaters as long as it contains the Slip 'N Slide scene, or for a disclaimer to be added urging viewers not to try the maneuver made by Spade. In the movie, Spade jumps belly first on the yellow plastic sheet without first inflating it with air and water. He then coats the slide with oil and crashes into a fence. The scene has been used heavily in television and theater ads to promote the film, which was No. 1 at the weekend box office. The lawsuit, filed against Paramount Pictures and Happy Madison Productions, charges the filmmakers violated its trademark by using the product without permission. Wham-O also claims the scene violates the product's safety guidelines, which limit the use of Slip 'N Slide to children between the ages of 5 and 12 weighing less than 110 pounds and under 5 feet tall. http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/09/08/di....ap/index.html aV |
