I also think the design is too "out there" for an expensive watch, and that you'll eventually get sick of it, or it will go out of style (if it's indeed in style). It looks like a fashion watch to me. I'm sure you can get something very similar that isn't Swiss for a tenth of the price.

I don't love bedat, generally, and think that expensive quartz watches are sort of ... odd, but that *is* a v. attractive piece. Definitely more bracelet than watch, imo.

Wow, Sebby, those are stratospherically expensive.

I could buy it for about 3.5k, which sounds about right to me. Retail is 6.5+. I am allergic to paying full price for anything, no matter how much I want it. I am also allergic to buying things often knocked off, which is why I carry Lambertson Truex, instead of something recognizable.

It is not "in style," but I see it as a fashion piece, and I would certainly wear it that way. More as a bracelet than a watch.

It reminds me vaguely of a watch my grandmother designed in the 40s while my grandfather was in Europe during the War. She designed really beautiful things, very delicate and intricate. Sadly, my father's sister took all of my grandmother's jewelry except the ring I wear daily that was bequeathed to me, so I assume it is out of the family by now.

I would try to get it made again, but I was a teenager when she died and I did not think to photograph all of the things she designed. My father, a photographer, did not think to do it either.

$3500 is still too much for it as a watch qua watch, but as an accessory, seems reasonable to me, at least for you-on-the-internet. And cheaper than the bedazzled bedat's that I found prices for.

You should not ask the price of gifts, but perhaps one of us could alert the guy in the chimney to the existence of this discussion?

All of this raises a bigger question: anyone come up with exotic gift ideas for the holidays yet, or it is all just jewelry and cars and stuff like that.

I still haven't gotten my wife the dutch oven she wants.

This isn't even a joke.

You don't have to wait for a special day to give her a dutch oven.

She wants the giant Le Creuset.

Le Fart.

I love my Le Crueset stuff, and not just because it's orange. I am amasing quite a collection, because everyone knows the orange pots and pans make me sooo happy.

The woman who just gave birth to your second Coltrane? Buy her Le Creuset.

ETA: I have the red, which I love, and use for roasting and braising, etc.

Yes, I am certainly going to direct my sweetheart to a discussion where I refer to him as "the Chimney Sweep." While I think he'll probably see the humor, he gave a very direct and unsolicited "I work for a living" on our first official date.

As for what I would get for him, it's hard. What do you get for the man who has everything -- and me?

I am actually thinking about something we discussed for his new house.

She likes it in red. To match the tea pot.

I have every intention of buying such a romantic gift. Maybe I'll hide a vacuum cleaner inside as a bonus!

Bedat is only about 12 years old. Still Swiss made, though. Owned by Gucci, which, IMO, is a bad sign. How much is this thing? Probably too much for a quartz watch.

Recently, one of the local news stations did some fluff piece on "ways you give away that you are an old" and one way was wearing a watch. People hovering around age 20 or so all rely on their cell phones for telling time on the go.

My SIL has a very cool necklace with each of her kids names on it. I would like to have one but everyone would think my name was Brazenette.

You could always just get her a zhu zhu pet. Or a watch.
