I gave up judging other people's cognitive dissonance for Lent. I was responding to Greedy's proposed account that I lapsed so could yell at ethnic kids. The fact that others don't follow me, or have gone precisely the opposite way, bothers me not at all.

Although I do grow weary of my still-Catholic family kvetching about Vatican-this and Pope-that over Sunday dinner. "Can you BELIEVE what those assholes are doing to the nuns and the gays? Oh, well. What canya do?" And I'm sitting right there. I should probably answer, "Nothing, not a goddamn thing." But that would only provoke a theological controversy about whether extra Ecclesiam nulla salus really provides a safe harbor for the lapsed and disaffected, and the prospect of hellfire ruins one's enjoyment of a meal.

You are letting the debate go on on their terms.

I like to open the family meal with a little philippic on the way Catholics these days are just closet Pelagians who don't properly appreciate St. Augustine's more mystical side, and then quiz the young'uns on Augustine, Ambrose, and the neo-platonism of Origen and Clement. After that, people always seem anxious to change the topic from religion. Alternatively, they have to hear my views on councils, Patriarchs and Popes in the early medieval church, and most of them really start worrying that the kids will listen to me and all be damned.

Out of a real fear this is a setup for another "Atticus's sister" joke, I'll decline to answer.

Made me laugh, but technically this fails 3, 4, and 5 on Sebby's list of qualifiers.

she was wholesome hot, and guys (or at least me) delude themselves that only they can see how hot she is (was). Like you've suddenly discovered that someone who doesn't tart up the sexy could still fuck really hard.

I don't usually respond to the same post twice, but I'll say this, I never thought of MTM as someone I"d like to fuck*. She was too sterile or something.

*not to be confused with who I would fuck in reality. Adder is prettier than some women I slept with.

That may give you some push back vis-a-vis the wingnuts, but the rest of us still see the blood on your hands.
