Great, we shared the same childhood. Definitely "beer ball." Never heard of it referred to as a party ball. But I have heard of condooms called "party balloons" - but I digress.

A beer ball looks like a huge lightbulb but round. My recollection is that you rented a tap and the lid on the beer ball had two rubber-coated holes (you people are such children -- stop with the jokes already) in which to stick the tap and then pump (shut up). Do no, I repeat, do not, count on the the beer ball whose contents you have just consumed to act as a reliable flotation device - it will, however, make a neat-o change jar when you are a teenager.

Ah, memories. They work nicely, balanced on your stomach as you float ten miles down the fast river on your inner tube on a hot sunny day.

(And the second one fits nicely into the small floating cooler tied to your tube.)

I seem to remember owning a beer ball tap...

and didn't the beer ball come in a box, which you filled with ice, therefore negating the need for a stand, or for a seperate container to keep the beer cold?

Much to be said for those. We enjoyed many of the larger kirin cans in college (with it's own clip on handle!!!).

But I think a pony keg in the industry nomenclature is the half-keg size (7.5 gallons or so), which is really a quarter barrel of beer (and the full keg is a half-barrel). Someone from Wisconsin?

You remind me of the first time I spent time in Atlanta, which was pretty much the first time I went anywhere Down South. I saw all these signs for Package Stores and, thinking they were like Mailboxes Etc., couldn't figure out why Atlantans needed so many places to mail things.

And then I discovered there were drive-through package stores out in redneckville, past the Big Chicken (Thrashers Fan, is it still there?).

Exactly. The beer ball is a single serving size, where a pony keg is beer when a couple friends are dropping by.

Yes, ice in box = cold beer ball for hours. I may be the only one who will own up to having consumed Gennie Cream Ale out of beer boxes. Hey, Kodak and Xerox have ensured that the water in the Gennessee River is crystal clean.

What always amazed me about the south were the drive-through liquor windows. Love that. Love the ones with the bottle openers dangling from the service window even more.

Definitely called quarter barrels. That's why we called the little can things pony kegs, because a keg (called a half barrel) and a quarter barrel were already named.
