Animal House may have been set in the 60s but it changed the 70s, although I suppose I was at more Dazed and Confused parties than toga parties.

Dazed and Confused was more of a period piece.

There were a lot of bands with the same basic sound.

I think those are all distinguishable. Boston is, in its own way, somewhat tolerable.

Styx is prog rock for the sorts with three or more close family members with fetal alcohol syndrome. Music for 50-year-olds who still sniff glue.

REO Speedwagon is classic 70s power pop.

BTO is a poor man's Grand Funk Railroad. Music for people who own a Ted Nugent record, and have actually listened to it.

This is not usually where I turn when I am looking for a discussion of mediocre music. It's great to see something new being discussed here.

Now, can someone ask GWNC or NCS a sex question?

I don't know. I see a lot of common threads. To be honest, these days it just all sounds like the same crap I listened to in high school to me.

And I'm surprised that you're not a Deep Purple fan -- in my experience, there is a strong overlap between the Deep Purple and Grateful Dead fan bases. Gotta be the love of the live extended drum solo.

I like Deep Purple. I'm just honest with myself about how good they are. It took a tremendous amount of soul-searching, but I am man enough to admit my brief high school belief "Made in Japan" was the greatest live record of all time was a bit misguided.

Sound is shitty on this link but I used it because it's both a local and a post-Marathon bombing performance.

You know you're a geezer when you watch a video of the Sex Pistols and think "They look so young!"

It saddens me that there are rumors Johnny Rotten might stand for Parliament with the Conservative Party.

But whenever I hear talk of the sex pistols, I always think of the very best cover of My Way ever done:
