The Moth has three NYC locations, The Bitter End is a young rauncy crowd. It is close to the Detroit Moth (the closest crowd to Detroit is Cambridge, which was very strange to see). Housing works Book Store in Soho is older and more hippy dippy touchey feely, like Ann Arbor.

But the BK moth in Gowanus is the strangest nightclub crowd I've ever seen. The converstation in the bathroom was guys talking about their masters in comp lit and philosphy and fuck knows what. It blew me away, I like to get a sense of the crowd, and normally you can from the stories and the reactions, but that minute listening to these, well let's say, younger versions of Atticus, told me i would not be able to pitch a story in any way that would capture these people. It was like walking down a street in Paris and trying to find something using my High School French. even if someone did get what I was saying, they'd pretend they didn't. and my daughter is moving there, and may end up with one of these guys (not that Atticus wouldn't make a fine SIL).

Apropos of this development for a band, a few weeks ago I was traveling on small European cruise ship and was shocked when Wilco's "You and I" was played on the ship's sound system near the (empty) pool while we got underway. Also on the playlist were songs like Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." How did this happen to Wilco? Was it the VW commercials?

strange shit right here- Thurgreed was trying to get the two of us to take on MJ the next year on the Star Wars show but the night before the contest I backed out. I realized I had never seen T pass the ball, ever, and I knew MJ would pick up on that.
