Well, my experience is more like yours, although I still care a bit about basketball when it involves memories of the great rivalry of my youth. ;) Also, I started playing soccer ten or twelve years ago after not playing since high school, which is what got me interested in watching it. Just as I am sure there are some British adults who have become passionate MLB fans.

I grew up playing soccer. It is still my most favorite sport to play.

I love watching the World Cup, but I just can't seem to get interested in soccer at any other time.

Actually, I do understand it -- it's a statement by someone who does not understand the game at all, and cannot recognize that a scoreless game can well be a product of a good offense failing to overcome a good defense.

I don't understand soccer so maybe a scoreless game can be interesting without many attempts on goals.

But I do understand hockey and a scoreless hockey game with few shots on goal would be less interesting for me even if it was because of excellent defense. What can I say -- I like to see people trying to score goals.

Tom Tancredo may be the one guy in this watering hole dressed in blue.

Meanwhile there are two attractive youn ladies at the bar next to me to whom I am not talking. Pathetic.

I predict a shockingly boring tie between Mexico and Uruguay next week.

AoN, just had lunch in a bar here in LA to watch the game, and found the crowd to be enormously and boisterously pro-Mexico (or, at least, anti-France, an issue on which I am sure we can all mainly agree.)

A few days ago, I was moaning and groaning that poor Mexico had no one rooting for them in that first game against SA. My incredulous boyfriend looked at me and when he regained his power of speech, said "there are 45 million people in this country alone that are rooting for Mexico." "Oh. Right."

Which is why U.S.-Mexico WC qualifiers are played in such locales as Columbus, Ohio.

I thought that was something the fans were doing themselves. where does it come from?

but say if there are only 1000 Mexican people there- they still are likely the only 1000 people who care.
