Amazing. From you, yet.

Out of what was supposed to be a semi-humorous rant about the amount of TV some people apparently watch, I get a couple of alternative conclusions:

1. Some people are losing their senses of humor at an alarming rate; or

2. You shouldn't hit people where they live - TV just means too much to them.

Go back to ripping on purses. I need someone else's higher purposes to look up to.

So, if the majority of posters didn't get that you were just trying to be "semi-humorous" then that means that we all have bad senses of humor, not that your post wasn't really funny. Am I interpreting you correctly? I just want to make sure that I resent you for the right snobby-ass reason (as there appear to be so many reasons to choose from)

When I used to interview law firm candidates, I judged people on their social skills routinely.

If you have the qualifications to be interviewed, you have the qualifications to work there. What I wanted to know is whether you were a complete ass, or someone with whom I would want to have a drink at the end of the day.

I left that job a few years ago, and I still routinely see my former colleagues socially and refer business to them.

With the crazy hours involved in working at a firm, why would you surround yourself with people you hate?

The people who are so boring that their boring-ness spreads out like kudzu, smothering all that is interesting or worthwhile around it. Anyway, that I happen to have some good friends at work is just a bonus.

As there is some unrelated discussion here about how some people purportedly think they are holier-than-thou or whatever, I will note that the unstated premise of my personality-based screening is that I am super-fucking cool. But I am, so it's all good.

Sometimes you are so full of shit I'm embarassed for you. At least I know I'm full of shit. I think you've actually convinced yourself that you're not. Amazing.

Your rant was semi-humorous? So? It's obvious that you look down on people who watch tv. Am I defensive about tv? Hardly. I just think you're an ass for thinking that people care about what you think makes up a shitty life. Hell, you gave examples of what people should be doing instead. Yep. That's semi-humorous. Ha.

And of course you say, "Look everybody, TM is being defensive about tv!" And you don't even realize you're doing the same damn thing as in the first post. Was I the only one who responded to your post? I guess all those people are "losing their senses of humor at an alarming rate" or maybe "TV just means too much to them" too. How classic. Your ego is just too fucking big.

I may post like a lunatic with random rantings, ravings and insults, but at least part of my persona is that I know I'm full of shit.

Christopher Goffard is my new hero. I gotta get me a 'stache like that. Speaking of sartorial matters, I just found my first grey (gray?) hairs. I am fired up. In a good way. Now I can be distinguished counsel instead of a maverick young turk. If I were still litigating, I'm sure I'd win a lot more motions now.

Hey Jack. After three listens, I think I'm much less keen on "Electric Version" than I was on "Mass Romantic." Not enough Neko (the Onion's review said the same thing). That said, it's still a damn good album. Gonna go listen to it again. By the way, should one with pretentions to being a serious music fan be ashamed to like the new Jack Johnson album? This is purely hypothetical, of course.

My decidedly un-meta reaction to this line was to wonder whether a certain sock from the Stalin Board was going to show up and the ultimate result would be this post's being tied to the waxing thread.

It can't be good that I remember things like this -- it undoubtedly crowds out other more important things, like say, regs. and statutes related to my practice area, or the names of classmates who will end up in influential positions.

The Bachelor

To Paigow and to everyone else who watches the Bachelor - this is your reminder that the finale is this Sunday.

" ‘Bachelor’ finale airs Sunday. Teasers for the finale suggest that the Firestone wealth will impress the women, and that one of the Firestone relatives will take Andrew aside and object to one of the two women. (Details, as well as that woman’s identity, won’t be revealed until the show.) Firestone and the woman he chooses will make their first public appearance as a couple on “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose,” airing at 9 p.m. ET May 21. The runner-up also will discuss her rejection."

Fish news

Ollie, I always get my fish at the downtown farmers' market. I've always enjoyed the stuff I've bought from the folks at Briney Sea Delicaseas, including Copper River. It's scrupulously fresh, and scrupulously de-boned (and even the Copper River never goes over $20/lb). My only problem with them is that they also sell farm-raised. This year there's a new booth run by folks who catch (troll, not net) Chinook out of Newport--I bought a few pounds last week ($10/lb) and it was delicious.

tmdiva 05-16-2003 07:48 PM

Interviewing and personalities

It's great to try to get a sense of a person's personality in an interview, but sometimes first impressions can be far off the mark. I once interviewed at a small firm, and one partner (of two--I would primarily be working with the other, alpha, one) I interviewed with seemed laid-back, not totally into working at all (ie., "if you have to work, law's okay, and it pays better than engineering"). He'd also done some community musical theater, and we had that in common. Right.

Okay, so cut to actual working conditions. The guy was invariably first in, last out. I don't think he was consciously trying to undermine me, but lots of things he did had that effect--didn't let the secretaries do my work, took calls from my clients when I wasn't in yet, etc. And he couldn't deal with the restaurant where we had our firm Christmas dinner one year (one of the nicest in town) because the food was too "weird." Evidently he would have preferred TGIFriday's.

A 20-minute interview will give you some idea, but no way it can tell you the whole story.
