Should you or your children get head lice, there is no substitute for thorough picking of all lice, nymphs and eggs.

I'll say that again: There is no substitute for thorough picking of ALL lice, nymphs and eggs.

Over the counter lice treatments kill some of the live bugs. Prescription lice treatments kill a higher percentage of the live bugs. NONE of these chemical treatments kill the unhatched eggs. NONE. That means repeated treatments with toxic chemicals to kill all the bugs who've hatched since the last treatment.

Lice combs get some of the bugs, but not all, especially the tiny nymphs, and don't touch the eggs. The eggs have to be scraped off between your fingernails or, if the hair is long, removed with the individual strand by snipping it next to the scalp.

There is a guy in Utah who has developed a special blow dryer that desiccates all the eggs, but it is not yet available on the market.

My oldest son has gotten lice twice. The first time I discovered it very quickly, and there were only a few eggs to pick. The second time he had a well-established infestation, with tens of live bugs and hundreds of eggs. Both times, I painstakingly removed all the lice, nymphs and eggs, and that was that. No chemicals. No recurrences. Done.

Needless to say, I highly recommend this approach. I also recommend not being ashamed about lice, since shame and silence help them spread.

I really don't need lice at this point.

I thought we had a separate board where you parental types could discuss all of the disgusting parasites your little urchins pick up in private without infesting the FB.

You can make this easier by thickly covering the kid's head in conditioner or mild soap, such as cetaphill, and leaving it in for at least 30 minutes. The live ones come to the surface and it is easier to come through the hair. The nymphs and eggs seem easier to dislodge as well.

Still not fun. Still requires nightly attention. Still far better than putting a lot of ineffective chemicals on your kid's head.

The PacNW is sick with lice. No offence. Probably all the tree hugging kumbayah-ing.

One combat is hair product. The lice don't like gels, mousse, waxes, morroccan hair oil et al.

Score another point for my metrosexuality.

Some kids give it to the parents and some of those people are probably in your office. I know they are in mine, which is why my door is always shut. Except always figuratively open to a stand up chap like Flower who knows the corner office handshake. dl dl.

Nice, although it should be a Mercedes S400 BlueHybrid.

Right back at ya. The rest of you are welcome to talk to my assistant, who is quite nice or, if she is busy (iykwimaiityd), you can talk to her assistant, who is less nice but also easy on the eyes.

Thank you for the timely and informative overview of recent changes in U.S. passenger vehicle weights, but I asked for a caption. Numbskull.*

They prefer kids. If you don't share hats at an elementary school, you'll probably be OK.

I don't know who would cry more over shaving Fugee Niece's pretty blond hair, Fugee Sister or Fugee Niece.

One of my high school friends who I am back in touch with thanks to the miracle of facebook has 2 daughters who came home from camp this summer with lice. I guess solving the problem must have been quite a task because my friend wound up shaving her own head (though she was unwilling to make her daughters do so). Then she posted pictures on facebook.

Uh, no real point here.
