Since 1776 Hampden-Sydney has sustained its mission "to form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere of sound learning." Ranked among the country's top liberal arts institutions, the College continues to live up to its historical promise. Among its alumni are one U.S. President, thirteen Senators, and many Congressmen, state representatives, doctors, attorneys, ministers, educators, and leaders in business and industry (nearly one alumnus in ten is president, owner, or CEO of a company). My question: how does that CEO stat really rate within college-educated society as a whole? If it is higher than normal, is this because the school instills some sort of entrepreneurial spirit in its grads? Because they can't get jobs elsewhere, so they decide to form their own businesses? Other possibilities? Does a higher stat say good things about a school or couldn't it cut both ways? My college BF started and later sold his own business in his mid-20s. He wasn't necessarily the best or the brightest, just the most willing to take a risk on business ventures. Good for him, because he was a bit of an egomaniac (understatement), and he apparently enjoyed having his mug on Rhode Island late-night tv space pitching cell phones. Others might be squeemish about that sort of enterprise. Sort of like plaintiff's side PI work. I good gig for some, who make a ton of money, but not what many lawyers would envision themselves doing because it is perceived to be unseemly. (I wanted to say seemingly unseemly, but I restrained myself) |

My sister spent the rest of that school year having to explain that she had no idea that the guys were gonig to show up and that she didn't invite them over and that she was very very sorry that they walked in on my parents having sex. |

H-S grads aren't likely to move to Manhattan to make it there and, by necessity, anywhere. If you were to measure the number of alums who were presidents or CEOs of publicly-traded companies, I imagine H-S would suffer in comparison to many comparably sized Northeastern schools. It's a good regional liberal arts school, but it ain't exactly Wharton/Tulane. |

In yet another, gee, I sure abused my mom's good nature when I was in college incident, my mom came to visit me one weekend at school. At the time, I lived with 5 other women in a three bedroom apartment. All but one roommate had gone away for the weekend, leaving me and mom mostly alone in the apartment. I put my mom in missing roommate's bed for the night, which was near a window that opened out onto a ledge facing the street. The window was the old-fashioned kind that opened with a crank and was impossible to lock. The ledge was about 15 feet off the ground, but pretty easy to climb up to if you knew how. Anyway, at about 3 am, two guys pried opened the window from the outside, and proceeded to climb into the room from the ledge, stage whispering "idle's roommate? idle?" At which point my mother simply sat up in bed and intoned: "No, idle's mother." The guys (who were in fact good friends of roommate) were mostly freaked. |

Husband's best friend said it first - he doesn't want anything that someone's farted in already. Or had sex in. So that's good enough for me. |
Yikes! They're back!

I will grant you that a comfortable ride may be worth it. The Mom and I drove her car, which is slightly more luxe than my Saturn. It was nice. But given the choice between an expensive car and jewelry, nicer stuff for the Manor, or more money in the bank, I'll pass on the car. Just not a car nut. |

Me? Cool! This particular ex had the habit of dreaming about sex and then, while still asleep grabbing whomever was in bed. She told me a wonderful story about the time she was sharing a bed with a gay male friend of hers, and she, um, grabbed him. He was there as she was telling me this story and he recalled it quite well. The look on his face as he explained how he felt on that occasion was priceless. |
