It's because they're trying to pander to too many people. Mia Hamm was on the cover last week. Really? During the playoff run and the first weeks of baseball - you put Mia Hamm on the cover. AND the freaking articles have gotten SOOOO long. Used to be you could read the articles in like 15 minutes. And the only good pictures are the first 5 pages. There used to be good pics throughout.

That said, I still read it every Monday on my way to work for the Steve Rushin stuff.

Edited to add - you're right - ESPN the mag is pure crap.

Canasta! How did you know? I learned how to play on a ski trip out west a few years ago. That's a fun one. For now I can only play on the computer. Cribbage is a good one too.

Why is it so hard to get people to sit down and play a game of cards? When I was growing up, card parties were all the rage with my parents and their friends. I have Rat-Pack-esque recollections of those parties. They all thought it cute that I wanted to take a puff off of my Mom's Kent cigarettes.

Did you mean the first weeks of football? The Women's World Cup started this week. To the rest of the world that is a huge sporting event. Unfortunately Ihave to follow most of the games via the internet or on the Spanish channels (love that Gooooooooooal Guy). Anyway, as a soccer nut, I was glad to see Mia on the cover. Fascinating article too.

When I was growing up and participating in sports, women were supposed to play the pretty games like tennis, field hockey, golf and gymnastics. When it got to the point where I could beat guys in butterfly I was considered freakish. People thought it strange that I wanted/needed to play soccer (they still do) and went in front of the school board to lobby for a women's varsity team (finally got one my junior year). Acceptance of women in sports has come a long way in the last 20-30 years.

Chalk up another vote for the suckiness of ESPN the Magazine.
