So we root for anything other than a Germany-Ghana tie, yes?

Perhaps it's delusional, but I'm rooting for a Ghana win. And a Serbian tie or win.

No, delusional would be rooting for a Ghana win or tie, and an Australia 8-0 victory over Serbia.

Why would you want that? If Germany wins, the US doesn't have to play Germany in the first elimination game.

either I'm missing something or I'm especially dense today--aren't their "national sports" the same?

Or are you suggesting that war is the national sport of Germany?

With Adder's scenario, Germany is out of the tourney.

If Ghana wins, Germany's out entirely, unless Australia manages to win or tie with Serbia.

S'roo tie puts Serbia in 2d with 4 points. A S'roo win gets Germany thru, unless they make up the huge GD gap. A Serbia win means we don't get Germany unless Serbia outscores Germany by 4 or more (or 3 and Serbia wins the flip).

Famous quote. Or at least a quote famously attributed to Thatcher.

But the easiest way to simply avoid Germany is to root for them to win.

For SF locals, Public House at the ballpark by 10:00 a.m. to get a seat (and let the Uruguayans and Koreans leave) and just stay through the Giants/BoSox game

if we're afraid of Germany shouldn't we just leave now?

Any of the possible opponents can beat the US. Germany seem likely to have the best chance. But that doesn't mean they're unbeatable. We nearly did in 2002.

If we avoid Germany, we get a relatively easy route - first either Serbia or Ghana in the Round of 16, then either Korea or Uruguay in the Quarters, to get to the Semifinals.

wait a minute. you find the game itself insufferably dull, but you study up on scheduling details?

I wonder what the oddsmakers are saying about how far the US may advance.
