Can I still mojitos in the backyard?

When I first heard Death Cab for Cutie, I thought, well, it's got a hook and it's catchy, it's harmless enough. Then Iron and Wine, and sure, he has a couple of good songs. Then I heard the Arcade Fire and thought, well, that's not awful. Then a friend started listening to Fleet Foxes, and I thought, well, it's better than most. But then came Mumford and Sons and I started to get uneasy. And now my lack of vigilance has spawned the fucking Lumineers, and every other band of their ilk, which is basically every dude with facial hair and a jug, banjo or fiddle or who can say "Hey" at the same fucking time. It's my fault.

Whatever Sebby has to say about horns in a rock song goes TRIPLE for banjos.

The best thing that Death Cab for Cutie ever did was name themselves Death Cab for Cutie, which ensured that I would never intentionally listen to any of their songs.

I think the best thing they ever did was clearly Zoey Dechanel, but I like googly-eyed brunettes.

Speaking of googly-eyed brunettes, Not Bob would LOVE Ray LaMontaigne, who is basically James Taylor and Kenny Loggins rolled into one. Not "Highway to the Danger Zone" Kenny Loggins; I'm talking Loggins & Messina Kenny Loggins here.

Do you masturbate to a special website where the models expound on their religious philosophy alongside their spread beaver shots?

A number of years ago, a young associate stopped by my office to talk music. She asked if I had ever heard Iron and Wine. I said, "Iron and Wine? I'm picturing two dudes with beards and ponytails sitting on a stage strumming acoustic guitars and singing songs about spiritual searching and redemption." She paused for a second and then said, "It's just one dude."

This was somewhat before the overwhelming wave of the New Earnestness in music, at the vanguard of which are the Bearded Young Men (I'm looking at you, Bon Iver). But whenever I get concerned that this New Earnestness has taken over, and the the entire youth of America will soon be spending all their time on porches working out the mandolin parts, I watch this:
