Even if the white kids are also from the right type of family, you are assuming one thing over another because you are uncomfortable with the opposite. And I concede I may be doing the same thing.

And the only point I care to defend in this argument is that this assumption is pretty important to your conclusion, and I doubt I can be made to feel stupid for saying so.

Coach K runs a basketball program that competes with Kentucky, Indiana, UCLA, UNC etc. And he does so without being an enormous state university with huge populations of a wide variety of backgrounds. He does so at a school that boasts 10% black undergraduates, which is pretty impressive -- I wonder if Harvard could claim the same. (UNC has 9.6%; Indiana has 7.2%; U.Mich., 5.8%; UCLA 4%.) The difference is Duke is less than half the size of those other schools -- in some cases far less -- and it's academically selective more like an Ivy than the others. With an undergrad population of 6,500, that means Duke has 650 black kids. Calling Duke "lily white" seems unfair when it matches or beats UNC on diversity. But I care far more about admissions than I do about the color of the team. A school with 4% AA enrollment but 3/5 black starters would be more of a problem for me because it reeks of exploitation.

Regardless, the Twin Cities seems like it should be more appealing than the main competitors (mostly Wisconsin and Iowa I guess) as a place to live. Unfortunately the whole sucking for 50 years thing kind of offsets.

And I say that as someone who hates them.

Before an injury, Minnesota had four in-state players starting, only one of whom was white. I wish we had some big doofy white guys who can shoot too, though.

It just occurred to me that 19-year-old Jalen Rose's disgust at Duke's recruiting only a particular kind of black player is no different from 18-year-old Atticus Grinch's disgust at Stanford's accepting only a particular kind of student -- it's just that Rose's expectation is that if life were fair he would be recruited and Atticus's expectation was that if life were fair he would be accepted. Or I guess the difference is that Lester and Flinty will back up only one of those simmering prejudices.
