While I agree with everything here, I think we draw different conclusions.
The schools in my town are perfect reflections of the town - insipidly suburban, unintellectual, focused on scoring instead of substance. The fact that they are mirrors IS the criticism. The person who focusing on the best test scores would like my town. That is why the schools suck and are oppressively stale.
One of my kids is at a nerd factory, where their idea of sports are yoga, ballroom dancing, and fencing; when she had a sleepover party with a large co-ed group of them, I checked in on them at 3 in the morning and they were arguing about Shakespeare. Another is at a school immersed in artsiness and outdoor stuff; she likes to come home covered in mud with a lot of energy. The schools are more a mirror of them than "the neighborhood".
Everybody should do their own thing for the kids, but avoid a lot fo the same thing as all the neihbors. Because the dictatorship of the majority inevitably celebrates the bland and mediocre.
