The fact that they know it will probably be a justified shooting if something is found in the hands of whoever they shot, I think, leads to trigger-happy cops. That's not to say that a cop, filled with adrenaline, who legitimately thinks whoever they have encountered has a gun and is about to shoot should always be able to distinguish between a real gun and a fake one or a wallet or whatever. Humans are humans. But they should be scared as hell that the hammer will come down hard whenever they do shoot the fuck out of someone who is completely unarmed.

Then we are in complete agreement. What I mean was "just telling cops to do a better job" is not a winning solution. It has to include not letting any child incapable of realizing what their conduct looks like to others run around play-acting in a way that makes others fearful. That includes cops; that includes other kids. If I had my druthers more kids would be taught about the utter fucking seriousness of firearms, rather than have this bizarro world where kids play with toy guns and then accidentally kill each other with real ones they come across. But I don't have a magic solution. I own zero guns of any type but am seriously considering having my kids take a gun safety class so they don't act foolishly.

Then again, I gave my nieces a walk-through of what to do when pulled over by a cop, because if they don't have the muscle-memory and presence of mind to behave in a way the officer predicts and understands to be harmless, they could wind up in a sad state of affairs. Nobody should have to boot-lick, but nobody ever taught me that rummaging through the glovebox as the officer approaches might be misinterpreted.

While I agree with everything here, I think we draw different conclusions.

The schools in my town are perfect reflections of the town - insipidly suburban, unintellectual, focused on scoring instead of substance. The fact that they are mirrors IS the criticism. The person who focusing on the best test scores would like my town. That is why the schools suck and are oppressively stale.

One of my kids is at a nerd factory, where their idea of sports are yoga, ballroom dancing, and fencing; when she had a sleepover party with a large co-ed group of them, I checked in on them at 3 in the morning and they were arguing about Shakespeare. Another is at a school immersed in artsiness and outdoor stuff; she likes to come home covered in mud with a lot of energy. The schools are more a mirror of them than "the neighborhood".

Everybody should do their own thing for the kids, but avoid a lot fo the same thing as all the neihbors. Because the dictatorship of the majority inevitably celebrates the bland and mediocre.

I blame the kids whose parents take them to NRA conventions to learn that real guns are just toys. Shit ya, what fun, let's go play with our AR-15s!

Officers pulling over young women usually aren't looking to get boots licked, though, right? I hope you told your neices to call their lawyer uncle and put him on speaker phone so they have a witness to what is said when after the trooper knocks on the window.

Which is not to say it's wrong.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and file this with "Shut up about what's 'wrong' with the public schools."

On the plus side, somewhere there is a public school board where GGG doesn't show up for the meetings.

There's no such thing as an "average" post. There is such a thing as the mode, i.e. the most frequently appearing value in the set. In the case of your high school's FB page, the mode post is "I'm appearing Friday night at The Moth," whatever that means.
