Particularly in a year where the other candidates weren't exactly compelling in all respects. Sure, a 16-8 for the Royals is about as well as can be expected, but 16 wins? Not much, even in this era.

To be fair, wins are overrated. ERA should be weighted, as it is a much more significant stat. If Greinke pitched for the Yankees he might have won 25 games. Hard to argue with that.

Sure, not saying he doesn't deserve it. But right or wrong wins usually count for something, and when the winner has 16 it should open the door to someone like Rivera.
