Agreed. It's amazing. I just can't help thinking something so unprecedented isn't a Trojan Horse of some kind. I mean, it has to be, right? A person at that level don't act out of pure altruism, or care what the public thinks.

If you want to express a complaint about the left, go for it. If you want to call the right "shrill," go for it. Any original idea: Go for it. But the "shrill left" is a trite cliche, exactly what Orwell was talking about.

Can someone identify who it is that they think has such a high-pitched voice on the left?

I think of Paul Ryan as your traditional shrill speaker, but that may just be because we have him by the balls.

Are you still giving Trump a hard time?

For me, the question is at what point Republicans start saying "Damn he's crazy" without continuing it by saying "BUT, we got our tax cut and we're going to get Kavanaugh, so maybe trashing everything is worth it." This article isn't yet there, these folks are still basking in their deal with the devil.

IIRC, the term originally was used to dismiss Paul Krugman (who turned out to be right). He is not, in a literal sense, shrill. It was a rhetorical way to dismiss what he was saying (which turned out to be right) without engaging with the substance.

WTF?

About the last person who should be called shrill.

Apropos of Nothing, I generally read Sebby postings as having a sort of nasally shrill tone.

Speaking of Krugman, I suspect that Sebby will be highly sympathetic with Krugman's suggestion that GOP voters are being, if not conned, scammed. If reading aloud, I recommend pretending this is George Clooney's car advertisement voice.

By the way, if your reaction as Committee Chair to Cory Booker starting to release withheld documents is to start releasing a ton of withheld documents, I think you're admitting those were being withheld in bad faith.

The big question remains: will Republicans continue to just give the country the middle finger rather than doing their jobs.

I'll go with GGG's "Richard Simmons With Enhanced Vocab" voice.

That's not at all where shrill started. I know you worship DeLong and all, but... That article remains shite, however much you cite it. (I think this is about the fifth time.)

Are you saying it started earlier, or that the quotations in that are wrong? If the former, I'm interested -- where? If the latter, it's there in black and white, but whatever. Not clear what part is "shite," or why.

eta: There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that what Delong described happened. I remember it. If you don't recall the meme, fair enough -- we read different things. If other people were calling liberals shrill before that became a thing around Krugman, I would like to see that, but I remember it as a way to marginalize Krugman.

I haven't thought hard on this, but I could swear shrill was a term regularly applied to feminists in my youth.

I believe that you are correct.

Somewhat relatedly, why was Babs considered Not Attractive back in the day? I mean, the perm era wasn’t a good look for her, but man.
