People in the US can avoid US culture. Think of the off-the-grid folks, the home-schoolers, even the fundies who put blinders on their kids in wal-mart, so the most they can get is a hillary duff album.
You think fundamentalists living in tents in the desert are going to see a mcdonald's and drop their bombs to buy a big mac? And you think that's going to hurt recruiting? Frenchmen--never successful battlers, threw rocks and grenades through the windows of mcdonalds for years, and still resent imperialist american culture. why do you expect a portion of islam to be unable to do the same?

I agree with Pony as well. I think it needs to be a two pronged approach. Culture, and where we can, extraction of fundamentalists with bombs, guns, etc... You westernize the culture as much as possible, and this pushes the loons to the periphery. Where you shoot them. Of course, this is gross oversimplification, but you get the general idea.
The thing is, the problem is never solved until the House of Saud and the Iranian Mullahs fall. They horde the money and keep the people down. People run to extreme religion when they have no money. We have millions of young angry male Saudis. They aren't getting drunk, laid or rich. But they're watching the Royal Family do all three. I don't agree with the Neocon plan (its a stupid form of manifest destiny, and Irving Kristol might be the most overrated "thinker" in history). But we do need to force a change that gives the decent Saudis and Iranians an option to their noxious extreme religion.
If you wonder why I hate religion, take a look at the pictures coming out of London. I have never seen it do anything but inflict pain and division. In a world so fucking divided, do we really need to have that extra division? Why? Why the fuck do we need to be so fucking small minded?
Pardon that naive soapboxish last bit... I'm a little verklempt.
