Having one spectacular album along with notable guest appearances would be enough to avoid him being labeled as sucking ass.

Rap tastes are so regional (and subjective) that I can understand you not liking him, but that doesn't mean he sucks. (I think Biggie is overrated, but he doesn't suck.)

Speaking of rap being regional, no Scarface or Geto Boys?

The whole list was very, very funny and clearly not representative of a real top 50 (see my post above on the relative weight of sales and current marketability, also known as the Ja Rule/Nelly effect).

It's sad that women don't get the attention they deserve in hip hop, but I'm not putting Latifah up there just for being a woman. She had one, maybe two good albums (and one of the best songs -- "Wrath of my madness" -- ever), but that doesn't get you into the top ten.

MC Lyte, BOSS, Missy Elliott, Lauren Hill, Monie Love, Salt & Pepa and Eve are all examples of other female rappers who didn't have to shake their asses to be put on.

And it's been argued that Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim, although sexually explicit and scantily clad are countering (somewhat) misogynist attitudes in rap. By owning their sexuality and presenting it on their terms, people get a more complete picture of who they are sexually. Now, one can disagree with this assertion because the presentation looks a lot like that of the stereotypical booty videos. But if you listen to their lyrics in combination with the images, you will find strong women who are letting everyone know (1) what they want and (2) that they don't need a man to get it.

Which spectacular album would that be? Not doggystyle. Two, maybe three good cuts. Not Chronic. That's one of the many "notable" guest appearances he's made. Snoop was original when he came out. Since his first album he's been coasting on his name and hasn't contributed anything of his own. Not only that, most of his stuff does suck. Cool sounding voice, true. But ask Tone Loc what that got him.

As far as Biggie goes, if you don't see how talented he was, there's really no point talking about him anymore.

Nice catch. I loved Geto Boys. "Mind's playin' Tricks on Me" is one of the greatest songs in hip hop. But I never understood the obsession with Scarface. His solo stuff wasn't good enough for me to cop and his popularity left me as confused as Too Short's did. Regional, no question.

Oh shit... I forgot about the Geto Boys. Their first disc was killer. I thought NWA was hardcore until I heard that disc. A musically infectious record... and The Geto Boys said shit I thought no one could ever say on a record.

I do not like the remade version of Gangsta of Love with the Sweet Home Alabama sample and the "Gangsta Boogie" refrain. The original which sampled Steve Miller's The Joker was much better. I assume the Geto Boys were sued by Steve Miller - otherwsie, why tamper with a classic nasty tune like that.

Thurgreed, I am not saying Biggie sucks. I said he is overrated -- i.e., he is not the greatest MC ever, nor would I put him in my top 5. I would however put him in my top 15.

I would not put Snoop in my top 15. I might put him in my top 25. All I am saying is he doesn't suck.

My problem with Biggie is that while his flow is fantabulous, his content tended to be a little light.

Plus, you can get the same voyeuristic guilty-pleasure crap for free on TV, just blurred out in a couple of key locations. How is that worth $10 a ticket?

No key location blurs and no waiting around week after week to find out that nothing all that interesting happens anyway. I'd pay $10 to watch the Real World Las Vegas movie just so I could get the other 5 hours of my life back that I missed before I concluded that is was worthless dreck unworthy of my Tuesday nights.

But in reality I'd pay $3 to rent it from Blockbuster and watch it in my very own home.

If you really liked the place, sent thank you notes to everyone you interviewed with and the office manager who set it up. Type them all - this is business, not social.

And proofread the crap out of them. While I do not think sending a professional thank you note ever hurts, and that it helps enough of the time to make it worthwhile, typos are killer.
