Leaving aside your inaccurate characterization (and Gordon Brown), what is your solution?

I think Less, like Arthur Denton, thinks what we need is a root canal. Definitely a long, slow root canal.

Wouldn't it be preferable to have a growing economy with some inflation, as opposed to a shrinking economy with no inflation?

All that money.

I needs to get me some of that.

Why Arnold may be the last of the celebrities-cum-politicians: No one whose bread and butter is being beloved of millions can possibly afford to be this unpopular.

I predicted Arnold wouldn't run in 2003 for this reason, and that he wouldn't run again in 2006. I was wrong both times, but that may have been because Arnold thought his charisma would make him the Teflon Governor as the state turned to shit around him as the Prop 13 and term limits chickens come home to roost. I was wrong in the short term but right in the long game.

if 38% of the masses go to see his next movie you think it'll be a bomb?

Let the business cycle work.

ETA: Put another way - the root canal. Higher taxes, lower spending, i.e. the same austerity program we impose on other governments when they get in trouble.

EATA: By the time Obama is spending the money, we will be coming out of the bottom and this "stimulus" will just be economic meth, and I will not be surprised to see inflation top Jimmy Carter's years, which hurts the poor on fixed incomes (supposedly who Obama wants to help) most.

To respond to myself ...

The tragic thing is that the opposition party has zero credibility. They fucked our way here and now - to quote whoever that was - the rest of us may as well lay back and like getting raped. I am pissing into the wind.

Not only do they have zero credibility, they also don't even have the intelllectual honesty to to support what you propose.

I'm hoping we aren't headed for Carter-era inflation, and I hope that you are right about the pace of recovery.

Even those guys don't actually like him. Approval polls skew toward favorable because there's a tendency not to admit that the guy you voted for is now fucking up. Think about the traditional demographic of a Schwarzeneggar flick. Do you think they'll spend their Friday furloughs going to see a movie starring the former boss who cut their pay by 5%?

I'm hoping we can limit it to Carter-era inflation. We currently have huge asset and commodities deflation, so we have some time, but I expect it to be ugly.

Well, if you ask nice Mr. Obama might get you one (with money borrowed from China).

I'm sure you're right. No celebrity could possibly ever have enough ego to think that he or she would do better.
