Sorry, I can't help out with info there either. Had a case recently where we thought we'd be the "substantially prevailing plaintiff" but then lost bigtime. Appeal has been filed.

Preliminary report is that a grant may come through but haven't gotten final word on that yet.

OTOH it's not as pathetic as it sounds. I had a very successful career prior to LS so I'm financially secure and spouse works. I really LOVE what I do; I look forward to work every day. Also, there may be an adjunct teaching gig fall semester for pocket change. The money will come eventually.

Anyone need a RCRA specialist (especially Sub. C) to consult?

I saw CSN at the Gorge a couple years ago but without Neil.

Yes is coming to EMP and the Key Arena in April. Tix on sale (for EMP) tomorrow.

Between LS and other commitments I haven't gotten out much for the past few years.

OK, so Ollie's asleep at the wheel. News about Seattle has gone unposted. Slacker.

Ray Charles, The Genius of Soul, who died yesterday of liver disease at his Beverly Hills home at the age of 73, began his career in Seattle when he was just 17.
The blind singer-pianist lived here only three years, from 1948 to '50, but he always acknowledged that the city, its musicians and its welcoming atmosphere helped shape his groundbreaking musical style and his philosophy of life.

"Seattle is the town where I made my first record. And if you ever want to say where I got my start, you have to say that. Because that was the thing that got me known."

He was referring to his first single, "Confession Blues."

I can't believe I didn't know this already.

She can't take no more Captain

The five-day tribute, "Beam Me Up Scotty ... One Last Time," had been in the planning stages for more than a year before it was revealed, earlier this summer, that the 84-year-old Doohan, who lives in Redmond, had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Coming so soon after the death of the similarly afflicted former president, Ronald Reagan, the family's announcement added greater urgency — and no small degree of poignancy — to preparations.

Some had feared Doohan might not have been lucid enough to appreciate the events planned in his honor.

As his wheelchair made its way through the banquet hall — escorted by his family, a single bagpiper and a phalanx of Klingon guards — Doohan smiled broadly and waved to the wildly cheering crowd.

Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original series, served as unofficial roastmaster, contributing several humorous, and occasionally ribald, anecdotes from his and Doohan's travels.

Chase Masterson, Leeta on several "Deep Space Nine" episodes, serenaded Doohan with a frisky "Latinum Is a Girl's Best Friend," a reference to the liquid Ferengi currency that was missed only by those few who weren't familiar with "Star Trek" iconography. Robert O'Reilly and J.G. Hertzler presented their personal tribute in Klingon, a guttural language, which legend has it was invented by Doohan.

The emotional highlight of the evening, though, came with Nichelle Nichols' ("Uhura") introduction of astronaut Neil Armstrong (how totally cool), who said he was proud that both he and Scotty were engineers.

"I've been remarkably fortunate," Armstrong said. "I've ridden on 13 different rocket engines and commanded three different space missions. All were primitive in that they didn't have warp drive, which made the Enterprise travel 100,000 times faster than anything I flew.

"For my next command, I hope to be given a Federation starship, and I'd like to be given a crew like the one James Kirk had."

Nude day

Ollie, you going to drive up for the body painting?

small group of activists is planning to stage a nude rally Saturday at Discovery Park's relatively remote north beach — a first step in their desire to establish a more permanent clothing-optional beach in Seattle.
The event over Labor Day weekend has upset at least one local couple who were planning to take their grandkids to the beach Saturday.

"Why should we be forced to change our family plans for that day to avoid being offended?" Magnolia residents Randy and Robin Hansen wrote in an e-mail to government officials last week. The e-mail called the nudists' event "ridiculous" and "illegal." (Prudes)

The event, called "As Bare As You Dare," will include body painting, games and swimming, all in the nude. Organizers, a group called the Body Freedom Collaborative, said that beyond planning Saturday's event, they want to establish a clothing-optional beach in Seattle, and that the relative remoteness of the park's north beach makes it a good choice in that regard.

Hansen said he wants the city to enforce a state law prohibiting indecent exposure. But Carr said it's tough to go after indecent exposure — especially if nudists are just being, well, nude.

"Usually with just simple public-nudity cases, we can't prosecute," he said. "[The crime] has to be based on a defendant's intent — if the defendant intends to be offensive" — exposing oneself to a child, for example, or walking naked into a church. Another component of the law is that someone must actually take offense at seeing the nudity in question.

Carr pointed to the nude bicyclists who ride in the annual Fremont Solstice Parade. "The police do not arrest them because we could never find anyone to testify that they were offended," Carr wrote in his e-mail to the Hansens. "In fact, each year thousands of people turn out for the parade knowing that the nude cyclists will participate."

To make a point, Hansen is considering showing up at the beach and being the one to take offense. "If the city doesn't get in front of this, where does it end?" he said.

He's a dick. Someone should throw body paint on him.

At Lawyerpalooza, for one time only, Fall City will call itself Pro Roc Vice, a play on "pro hac vice," a legal term that means "for this occasion."

Who knew that snakes need exercise?

Keep an eye out for a missing pet, a 6-foot-long, red-tailed boa constrictor named Mercy.

The snake was taking some exercise in the front yard of their home Sunday evening when it escaped. A search turned up nothing, so Dillman posted fliers on telephone poles and distributed them door-to-door, and hired some neighbor kids to help her look. She said the days are still warm enough in East Wenatchee for a boa, but the nights are getting cooler, so she's hoping Mercy will come out in the sun to warm herself in the morning.

In the meantime, the man who mows the back field has agreed to hold off for a few days, just in case the snake is in the tall grass. And Dillman went to the store yesterday get a couple of rats. She plans to put Mercy's cage in the yard and tie the rats to it, in hopes the snake will find that enticing.

"I think she's probably scared," Dillman said.

Rebecca Long, field director for the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society, says constrictors can be dangerous to small pets or children, although they generally go after rats or squirrels, and only eat once every three or four months.

Your First Amendment rights have been reinstated.

Judge ends 17-year ban on new strip clubs
Seattle moratorium ruled an unconstitutional restraint on free speech.

SEATTLE - The city’s 17-year moratorium on new strip clubs is an unconstitutional restraint on free speech and can no longer be enforced, a judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge James L. Robart ruled Monday that the city’s rationale for repeatedly extending the ban lacked merit.

The city had argued that the case was not a censorship issue, but that it was waiting for the state and county to adopt new cabaret regulations. It first imposed a temporary moratorium on new adult cabarets in 1988, after the number of strip clubs in Seattle jumped from two to seven (oohhh, jumped clear to 7) over two years.

Still, if the City Council votes next week to adopt a rule banning lap dances, few new strip clubs may open in Seattle anyway. The panel is expected to vote on Mayor Greg Nickels’ proposal requiring exotic dancers to remain 4 feet from their clients.

The plan has drawn protests from the city’s club owners and exotic dancers, who fear it will severely cut into their business.
You think? 4 feet? That's like at Papa Bear's where the guys dance behind the velvet rope. 4 feet seems ridiculous.

I have had the distinct displeasure to meet many of the current City Council members. They can't gin up three digits worth of IQ is they combine what each of them has and doubles it. I would Nagin and Blanco 100 times out of 100 before I would these mental midgets.

That said, I think the continued clean up and gentrification of the first avenue corridor is a good thing. I wish market forces could dislodge the lusty lady and the Vu, notwithstanding my love of the porno. Lake Forest Park or Sea Tac is not that far of a drive.

It would be one thing if we were talking decent strip clubs. But the Vu is a huge rip-off, and I've never really understood the whole Lusty Lady "strippers under glass" concept.

Just drive to Portland, land of a thousand strip clubs. Most of them suck, but at least you can get a beer.

So I met a bunch of guys from Portland while I was in Sonoma on Saturday. A friend of mine is trying to convince me to go to Oregon Wine Country over the Thanksgiving weekend.
These guys totally tried to convince me it was the best weekend to go to OWC because they claim it's 40% off everything that weekend. Ollie? Pensk? Is this true?
Also, they suggested Archery Summit, Domaine Serene, Sylvan Ridge and Broadly (Claudia's Choice). Not to mention Drouhin.
Any comments? Any other suggestions? Are they lying?

They were lying, at least on the 40% off part. Sure, there may be some sales, especially on library wines and stuff available only at the winery, but 40%? Wineries don't like to undercut their retailers.

Thanksgiving weekend is a big deal (as is Memorial Day weekend). Good things: some pretty good food spreads; barrel tastings and tastings of wines that aren't always available; some wineries are only open to the public on these weekends (until recently, Serene and Drounin fell into that category). Bad things: steep tasting fees and big crowds.

The wineries they recommended all make great wines, if perhaps overpriced. Archery Summit is way pretentious, but tastey. Put Beux Frer (sp?) into that category as well. It's partially owned by Robert Parker, and only open on the big weekends. They'll probably charge $20 bucks to taste two or three wines, but you'll get a Riedel glass and some nice snacks.

I like Tori Mor a lot; tasting room has a Japanense Zen feel and they pour a bunch of good single-vineyard stuff. Also: Willakinzie; Patricia Greene; Argyle. There are really lots of good ones these days.
