I've never ice bathed either. I can tell you, though, that even though vodka looks like water, it does not hydrate like water, regardless of the quantities consumed post-marathon.

After my last marathon in 2007 I covered my thighs in IcyHot. Do not do this.

we don't have the same support system you have- like you were sponsored by speedo, nike and a bike compnay right? any of those would have bought you an ice soaker.

We're on our own.

DeSoto, Saucony and QuintanaRoo (before it got sold to Merlin), but otherwise, yes, point taken.

Oh, also, BionX and Stoker Bar (and powerbar, but who hasn't been sponsored by them...?)

Its an acquired taste, but, as noted, once you get used to it, it can feel good. I doubt if you will regret it.

I give it the Spartan! stamp of approval.

Took an ice bath for an hour and went to bed.

The next day, same heat and humidity, did the Chicago Tri in 2:05:and change.

Another ice bath and then Pennys noodles for lunch.

I just prefer drinking beer to sitting in ice water.

This should be on another board, but I fell asleep this morning watching Sesame Street with the 2-yr old (she got up REALLY early). When Elmo's World came on, I woke up and started singing the song. My daughter looked at me and said, "no singing, daddy. Go to sleep."

During my visit to Iceland, we hiked close to Eyjafjallajokull. I am glad it was not erupting at the time.

Iceland also had money then.

On my vacation, a marathoner preached to me about the benefits of ice baths so last Sunday I took one. I filled the bath with a big bag of cubes, put in some epsom salts and ran some cold water and got in* and managed to stay there for about five minutes. I think it helped my legs a bit, but I wanted to take a survey to see if any of you do ice baths, and how long you stay in, and if it helps, and if you take a hot shower after, etc.

*Motherfucking fucking hell, it was so fucking cold

I used to do these after practice in college because the trainers swore by them. They're supposed to keep swelling down, I think. And yes, I took hot showers after.

Runner's World agrees.

Quote:

Cryotherapy ("cold therapy") constricts blood vessels and decreases metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Once the skin is no longer in contact with the cold source, the underlying tissues warm up, causing a return of faster blood flow, which helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body. "Ice baths don't only suppress inflammation, but help to flush harmful metabolic debris out of your muscles," says David Terry, M.D., an ultrarunner who has finished both the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and the Wasatch Front 100-Mile Endurance Run 10 consecutive times.

Though you could use individual ice packs, cold-water immersion generally produces a greater and longer lasting change in deep tissues and is more a more efficient means of cooling large groups of muscles simultaneously. The discomfort associated with sitting in a tub full of ice water scares off some athletes.

2, but more important, I distrust and go against EVERYTHING Runner's World says. I believe their shoe rankings single-handed ruined the best running shoe brands around.

At the Equinox on 63rd St., they have a "cold pool" next to a jacuzzi thing. I tried to get in one time and lasted about 45 seconds. DAMN!! It was so painful -- though every running trainer I've ever had (in a platonic sense, of course) has extolled the virtues of ice baths for recovery. I could never really take it for long.

At the cold pool on 63rd St., I saw a guy in there reading the newspaper as if he were sipping a latte at Le Bilbouquet with his morning croissant. MOTHERFUCKER!! I don't know how he did it.

Wasn't submersion in ice baths something that the Nazis did to the Jews in concentration camps?

Just sayin'.

We had a problem last winter when we replaced a water heater with a new supersized one so we could get oodles of hot water and have long luxurious jacuzzis going simultaneously in every bathroom. But it turned out the combination of the boiler and new superheater drew more air than there was in the utility room, especially on cold days, and we could only keep the heater going if we left the utility room door open and a fan blowing in. Net result: every time the cleaning woman came early in the morning, she shut the door and I got a cold shower. After a while, they really weren't so bad. I even started staying in a little extra just to wake up.

Still, I'm glad we're replacing the boiler to fix the problem.

Good think it didn't just cause a lot of sleepiness. Wouldn't adding an outdoor air intake be better than replacing the system?

System needed replacing anyways. And there was a government program to subsidize the replacement with a more energy efficient one.
