Young Bush
Great game last night. I have some observations.
1. Bush, while still incredible, took himself out of the game after making that bone-headed play. Suck it up, man. You're supposed to be the best guy on the field and you're in a funk in the biggest game of your life? 2. Matt Leinert is overrated. This observation is based on my limited exposure to him, because I really haven't seen him play that often. But, I've never seen anyone get that kind of protection and that kind of time to throw the ball in a game as big as this. He got sacked what? Once? I don't remember him being hurried. And he still should have thrown about three picks. He had a great game, no question and really put points on the board in the second half, but how good is he with a different offensive line and no Bush? How good is he against NFL rushing schemes and coverage defenses? 3. Young couldn't have been more impressive. I don't think I've seen anyone look that confident in such a huge situation in my life. Relaxed, calm, confident. A couple of times, when the line broke down and they had 2-3 guys rushing him, I thought the play was dead because he was just standing there. Then, zip! He's making moves, shedding tacklers and finding a guy downfield. So, who do you pick number 1 now? I take Young. You get a quarterback and a running back. Houston should trade Carr for some linemen, suck it up for one more year while Young matures and then step back and watch those jersies fly off the shelves. TM |

2. Other than the should-have-been-picks, I don't think we watched the same game. Leinert was sacked at least twice, hurried (and hit) repeatedly, and flushed out of the pocket regularly. I didn't think it was a very good game for USC's o-line. Leinert was great in the second half. Throwing strikes. He'll be a good, maybe great, pro qb. 3. Your insane. Young was awesome last night, no question. But there are still question marks as to his ability to throw at the pro level. I bet he comes back to Texas next year to get his Heisman and show the pro scouts another year of solid passing. Great game. I still think USC is the better team, and probably wins 6-7 out of 10. But damn, Young was good last night. |

Now on to Sirius. I was given a portable sirius receiver for Xmas. Here are my thoughts on the genre: Absent Howard, no way I would bother. Positives: -A million channels, with varieties such as pre-1980s metal to dirty comedy to every sports game currently on. -No commercials FOR MUSIC CHANNELS ONLY. Surprise, the sports and talk channels are filled with garbage commercials. -It doesn't fade out just because you are driving long distances. Negatives: -A million channels with very little on. The content isn't something I would buy absent Howard Stern. Forty million songs I would never want to listen to anyway. The comedy is interesting but not with kids in the car. I think any decent IPOD/Car adapter -- with its 5 days worth of songs and podcasts THAT I LIKE -- has this crap beat by a mile. -It fades out every mile in the city. Since my car stereo doesn't have an aux input I have to play the thing through my FM radio, which SUX. The thing fades out in the city, which means you have to tune into a new channel on your radio, then a new FM channel on the Sirius. -The unit has to be plugged in to the antenna that I had to install and to the cig lighter. Switching between my portable GPS and the Sattelite receiver is a PITA I could do without. I am glad I sold the stock when I did. |

And Ollie, if Young stays, he's an idiot. No way a rushing quarterback should risk injury with another year in college. And what does he do next year to top this year? On his throwing motion, it could be a problem. But remember, he's 6'5". If it is a problem, it can be fixed. I was just so impressed with his presence. His poise. I haven't seen such confidence since Jordan. And I'll take that every time. TM |

Plus, having all of those dedicated traffic/weather channels rock. Quote:
I may get break down and get one of the non-portable receivers installed one of these days. That would eliminate the loose antenna wire running through my car, and the need for the cassette adaptor and the plug into the cigarette lighter. |

I got Sirius for Xmas- 2 stations seemed intriguing- one was College Station rock the other was supposed to be a blend of punk, indie and hip hop. In my limited listening time (I haven't put it in the car yet) the College station rock could be the formulistic "Alt-Rock" commercial station here. The punk/indie/HH could be the commercial hip hop station here. I assume it must play other music, but what it does play was pretty mainstream- i was hoping to hear stuff I wouldn't hear otherwise. I went into the game prepared to be wowed by Reggie Bush, but if I were David Carr, I'd be very nervous right now. |
