The sun set at around four, it seemed, and the fog rolled in shortly afterwards. We stumbled up on a night market in a little piazza where the vendors were selling all sorts of treasures and baubles at around 11:00 pm. When we went back the next morning, there was no trace of it. I'd been to Venice before that trip in the spring, and it seemed much more Disneylandish then. In the winter, it felt both real and somewhat otherworldy. I loved it.

Venice would be late August. Tourist hell. However, I will totally search out the raw horsemeat. Awesome.

Bangkok. I spent 45 minutes (pleasant because it was airconditioned) in a taxi to go 6 kilometers. The city does not work. Manila is right there too.

What amazed me about Venice was how quickly it stopped being tourist hell if you got just a little ways off the beaten path. Walk away from St. Mark's for a little and you can get into the interesting parts of the city.

And go to St. Mark's at night, to one of the cafes or bars on the Plaza. Even in high tourist season there were no crowds at all, and it was really beautiful.

It's been over 10 years since I was there.... but Venice doesn't change, does it?

I have had the clusterfuckiest clusterfuck of a ticketing experience with United in the last day, and am now talking to the sixth customer service representative to sort it out. The original mistake was mine, and they have just been excellent in trying to help me sort it out. If it every does get sorted out, I will be so very grateful.
