I was just surprised because the press was most certainly that the kid was this massively inventive kid- and of course, I was too lazy to even put together a kit so he is certainly not deserving of ridicule if all he did was that.

Two kids on robotics team, one now at college (you'll be happy to know heading for engineering), one 14 and, like Ahmed, in his first couple of weeks of high school. They were both playing with circuit boards from early ages. They both have boxes of stuff in their room they've salvaged from anything we might have thrown away, like old clocks, old computers, etc. New circuit boards cost money, so they worked with lots of salvaged ones as well as new. Half the kids on robotics team have something in their backpacks with wires, circuit boards, and odd parts on any given day.
So, yeah, Ahmed's clock is the kind of thing my kids have done. I don't think we should assume he's a genius or anything because he had a project with him, but that's he's a kid just like many others, with an interest in stuff. But he got arrested.
One thing you and I both know that's not, though, is a bomb. Nothing in that box goes boom. Biggest damage it could do is a short circuit. Can make a bigger explosion with a bottle of coke.
