My three hypotheses were (1) Betty wanted to make Sarah Beth feel attractive and was trying to do something nice; (2) Betty wanted to see if she could use a man's attraction to her to manipulate him, but she had no interest beyond seeing if she could yank Arthur's chain; or (3) she was in such pain over Don that she wanted to make Sarah Beth feel miserable by inducing her to succumb to tempation with Arthur so that she wouldn't be the only one with a broken home.

That was an open question until the last episode. SPOILER ALERT. What we learned in the Mountain King episode was that it was 3, with a bit of scientific curiosity about Why People Cheat. I interpret her phone call with Sarah Beth to mean she wanted to find out whether people cheat on nice spouses that they love, and the answer she got was yes. And that cheaters suffer too, which is what she needs to know to forgive Don -- at the expense of her own innocence.

ETA that the story arc is The Great Gatsby reset in Midcentury Modern and with Peggy playing the Sam Waterston character. Which is nice because it's never been well adapted for the screen, but bad because it means Don Will Have To Die.

4- Betty needed to remove the temptation, because she knew she was about to blow up her marriage.

I know these people. I went to school in boston.

But only if I've been drinking a fair amount.

I gather that you were at Harvard during the brief regrettable period in which they replaced Gatsby in the undergraduate canon with How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Totally wrong. Betty wasn't attracted to Arthur. Too Judge Reinhold.

Speaking of Judge Reinhold, I happened to surf past a show on WB and he was on it playing a washed-up private detective. The show Easy Money was crap at moments but held my attention with some surprisingly clever moments. It stars Roseanne's TV sister. The scenes with her and the leading man (her son) were well-written and acted, IMO. Of course, I haven't watched it since but it seemed to have some potential.

on a board where tyrone posts all the time, i feel that is a really shitty thing to say.

yesterday I had a limo driver to the airport that was fucking nuts. i actually thought at one point he was threatening to kill me.

anyway, he was talking about our new terminal and how there are stains on the carpet already- he goes, "all these people crowding up at Starbuck's and McDonald's like they're getting ready for the electric chair."

wonderful phrase, one that I've not heard before.

So in your hypo, Sony would be saying "We think you're getting too good a deal from everyone you deal with--Panasonic, Alpo, Hanes, whoever--so we're not going to sell to you at the price you want. In fact, we resent the fact that you're doing that so successfully, so we're not going to sell to you at all." Sure, that's negotiation, but then so would be "I'm going to burn down your store if you don't give me the deal you want."

actually no. because there is no substitute for Kid Rock (although most of us can deal with that), and sony has competition. Apple w/o kid rock is a store missing something someone "needs" to feel like they can rely on the store to fulfill their needs.

it's more like if a company had a choke-hold patent on some vital link, say a link between your computer and your car, and that compnay said you are killing the electronics business with your margins- you don't get our link unless you give everyone an extra 2%.

some of us could live w/o the link, but to some it limits the worth of the store.

You will note that your tying the knot has, among other things, brought a post-neo-faux-sock(acrylic) imitator of the late and sometimes lamented Penske Account back to feel a little of the inimitable Lawtalkers Love. Which he has now apparently felt in spades. This alone is reason for tremendous satisfaction and rejoicing in certain quarters, or even entire halves. To cite only one example, Flower's childlike joy is Farve-like.* It's good to see him happy again.

*which is to say his childish joy is Farve-ish. Or something equally redundant.

ever think that maybe Penske coming back (with poor spelling, hmmm, i remember a retired sock that spelled poorly, but i don't think it was p., or maybe it was p., but not penske), and maybe flower being more confident are both because slave has been gone. he can be a bit critical at times.

WHo do you think is more chilling to free expression on these boards - Slave here or Ty on the PB? I am trying to gauge the varying degrees of repression and how much credit to give you for continuing to post under these conditions.

The second part of your analogy is so ridiculous, it's not worth responding to.

I think your statement was completely overreaching and now you're just trying to back it up by being ridiculous. Kidd Rock might think Apple is being unfair to everyone, but it is quite clear that no one gives a shit what Kidd Rock thinks, including other artists who overwhelmingly sell their music to Apple. Therefore, his position is to be taken for what it actually is--a failed negotiating ploy. I know that's what it is. You know that's what it is. But if you want to call it socialism, go ahead. You'll just look ridiculous for doing so.

I think that Flower's biting tongue is far more chilling than either Slave's or Ty's dogmatic ravings. I often find myself hitting the delete key instead of posting something for fear I might suffer Flower's wrath. I vote we should all shun him until he turns nicer.

claiming one gets yellow cards is building up an in-group or secret society of people whom Flower feel are worthy of his faux ire. It makes the rest of us feel B-list.

I'm not going to shit-can 4,000 songs for which I paid good money because SanDisk makes a slightly better player this year.

This analysis seemed spot-on to me and then moreso after my visit to the Apple store yesterday. I inquired about a battery replacement (thanks to Icky for his helpful remarks earlier) and the greeter's first impulse was to tell me that I could trade in the old one for 10% off whatever new one I buy. I plan to buy a new one but was thinking about giving my old one to my nephew. It costs $80 to replace the battery and I have to make an appointment to do it. Sufficiently expensive and a pain in the ass that it's not worth it. I probably will just trade in the old one just for recycling reasons when I buy a new one in a few weeks.

Also, the place was pretty full, compared to the rest of the mall on a Friday afternoon, and considering that everyone is supposedly not spending their money on frivolous retail.

Authorities were called early Friday to Thomas' Westchester County home, where police said a 47-year-old man was taken to the hospital and treated for an overdose of sleeping pills. Several media outlets reported that police confirmed it was Thomas who went to the hospital.

But reached on his cell phone Friday, the 47-year-old NBA great told the New York Post he had not been treated for a sleeping pill overdose, and that it was 17-year-old daughter Lauren who had a medical issue.

It "wasn't an overdose," he told the newspaper. "My daughter is very down right now. None of us are OK."

Hall forcefully refuted Thomas' statement.

"My cops ... know the difference between a 47-year-old black male and a young black female," Hall said.
