Pass on the right, tailgate, no signals.

But they seem to drive worse when out of Michigan.

None of that is particularly distinctive. And you're a New Yorker.

Hypothesis: Drivers in other large cities always seem "worse" because you're not used to the particular bad conduct of that city. You get used to the ebb/flow of traffic in any city in which you drive a fair amount.

Support: Boston drivers are terrible, exhibiting all the worst behaviors. But if you drive there enough you know exactly what is coming at any given point, so you can either anticipate and prevent or not get outraged because you know it's coming.

Query: Traffic Circles: or Rotaries. is that a mostly Boston traffic phenonmenon? less so elsewhere. what is protocol?

those in circle right of way why don't folks "get" that?

You hit the nail on the head. And this is why driving in DC is the worst; it's a big melting pot of truly bad drivers from all over the country (and world, but at least they sport diplomatic plates so you can identify and avoid them), and no one knows the "rules".

Mix one part bad drivers from all over, season with bad road design and poor signage, and fold in heavy traffic.

Don't forget drivers who believe they cannot wait to get home to check their blackberries or text their BFFs.

umm, no offense but we invented driving. if I am forced to pass you on the right, why would you not blame yourself?

I moved to the suburbs about three weeks ago. It was a sad transition, but having a yard is awesome.

That being said, I really have to tone down my driving when I'm in my suburb. Apparently, there are actual rules there that I'm supposed to follow (as opposed to Chicago, where it is complete chaos - which actually works when, like you said, everyone else understands that there are no rules).

Oh fuck you and your Michigan lefts. That shit is annoying.

I do appreciate the recent Coney Island restaurants that are popping up here though.

People run red lights and stop signs all the time in DC. I've never felt less safe as a pedestrian.

I second.

Grew up driving in NJ/NYC, now live in MA (so I am expert at navigating rotaries and Route 1). Driving in DC is the worst. That is also the one place I wouldn't bike commute. I've ridden in NYC and Boston, but those drivers in DC are insane.

Malaysia and Indonesia. Hands down, the two worst places for driving I've ever seen. In Malaysia, they run a two-lane highway (not street, highway) using a one-lane road. This means that the two left tires are on the pavement and the two right tires are in the dirt, while both lanes of traffic speed past each other at 80 mph in opposite directions. Add to that the moped and motorcycles who fucking pass in these conditions. They do this by darting into oncoming traffic and then darting back at the last possible second. When I was there I couldn't fucking believe it. I was in the passenger seat and the first 3 times a motorcycle did this, I thought he was dead, but the driver calmly said, without flinching or letting up on the gas an ounce, "Don't worry, he'll get back." And they did every time.

In Indonesia, families own one moped and they carry their entire families on them. Stoplights are no more than polite suggestions. We regularly saw mopeds loaded with two adults and three kids weaving in and out of traffic. Fucking insane.

That said, New York cabbies are the fucking worst. I am racist against cabbies. They all fucking suck and should be gathered and dumped in the Hudson.

TM
