But Trump won't be a Goldwater (where Cruz could well be, and Carson certainly would be).

There are no Goldwaters anymore, as Texas alone is likely to keep any GOP nominee away from too much embarrassment.

Texas voted for the currently indicted asshole that was already under criminal investigation at the time of the election for Attorney General rather than *gasp* vote for the Democrat. No way in hell is this state going Blue any time soon no matter what the demographics say.

Yeah, he likely will. The Liberals in SF despise her - that's not a good sign.

I don't know. The skeletons in Rubio's closet, financial and otherwise, are festively adorned.

Rubio can get the GOP nod. But he can't win the general.

Unparticipate. Facebook is an insipid shithole, a forum in which those of decent opinion neuter all useful comments in service to politeness, and consideration of "personal brand" squelches any possibility of useful but controversial thought being offered.

Of course it's cliche to register hatred for FB. But it bears repeating. It is the mind cancer of the world, a force for dullness unparalleled in modern history. My only quibble with its critics is their consistent assertion it's making us dumb. Dumb is possibly entertaining. The problem with FB is it makes everything and everyone in it an insufferable bore.

If he gets the GOP nomination, he will lose badly.

I disagree strongly on this one and this is why Trump is so effing scary.

He's an angry loud populist shouting in a 3-second Kimmy K society where no one cares anymore about substance but instead cares only about popularity and being loud. The schtick works well. You have inner-city leaders here in SF and Oakland now parroting his claims about immigration.

I know plenty of self-identifying Dems who think Trump currently speaks much more plainly for them than the Clinton Foundation. I was shocked by this myself.

If he gets the GOP nomination (and I hope he doesn't get that far, or takes this ego trip that far), he wins with a relative majority landslide.

Plenty of time left, thank god.

Do you realize how hated and isolated Cruz is among his fellow senators, on both sides of the aisle? What leadership position do you expect him to get in the Senate?

Paul in a leadership role is mildly less laughable, but his predilection for getting into food fights with the Senior Senator from his own state, who just happens to also be the grand pooh-bah, has been a bit career limiting.

Hmm. Reid is despised so much that a mob-influence treadmill beat him up. Yet he's still a leader to be feared. These 2 guys you mock - Cruz and Paul - are both under 50 and leaders of separate and very important wings of the GOP. They'll both be around for another 25 years. Don't overlook either.

PS - your scent - like your party - is losing in the Old Spice poll.

The question for Trump is whether he can get out more white men to vote for him than he motivated women and latinos to vote against him.

Lots of people despise her. But the choice between her and absolutely anyone the right is putting up is very easy.

Once again, I think predictions of his demise are premature. Half the country agrees with him.

I agree that Rubio can win the GOP nomination, but I don't agree that he can't win the general. I don't think that he *will* win the general, but he could. I think many of the other GOP candidates will have a harder time getting 270 electoral votes against Hillary.

And if Trump doesn't lock down enough delegates to win on the first ballot, there is no way he gets the nod. The regulars will twist arms, approve challenges to his slate, set up floor fights, etc., and Trump doesn't have the mechanics and fixers on his side, so he gets hustled on every front. Result? Brokered convention and maybe the Mittster is anointed to save the party. And if that happens, he runs as a third party candidate who takes more votes from the GOP than from Hillary in places like Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Of course, I am the guy who thought that Bill Bradley was going to win in 2000, so take the above with a grain of salt.

He has no choice now but to keep doubling down and becoming more and more outrageous. His problem is he has to keep doing it often, to keep the media on him. (Save Huffpo, which ludicrously stated it would not be giving him press anymore, as though it's a serious media outlet, or potential Trump voters read it.) At this rate, he's going to run out of crazy shit to say around February.

But never underestimate his running mate, Daesh. They need to keep him on camera and ranting against Islam. It's their best recruiting advertisement. If they can pull off another attack here while Trump is still relevant, his numbers are going to surge.
